The ancient city of Aspendos is known for its Roman theater dating back to around 161-180 AD. It is also one of the best preserved Roman theater in the World.
The theatre of Aspendos is the best preserved ancient theatre and the most impressive Roman structure of Pamphylia.
The ancient city of Aspendos was founded by the Greeks in the 5th century BC and later came under Roman rule. During the Roman era, the city flourished and the Roman Theater was built to entertain the masses.
Despite earthquakes and other natural disasters, the theater has remained remarkably intact, a testament to the ingenuity of its ancient builders.
The Aspendos Theater is located in the ancient city of Aspendos, about 25 miles east of the modern city of Antalya, Turkey.

Aspendos Ruins and Theatre - Antalya, Turkey
Must visit if you are in Antalya region! I was very impressed by this historical place.
Aspendos is famous for its best-preserved ancient theater which was built in 155. It is also one of the largest theater ever built by the Romans in Asia. The theater has a capacity of 12.000 people and is still used today for performances and festivals. The theater is absolutely beautiful!
If you have more time, I suggest you to also explore the rest of the site, including the stadium and the ruins at the top of the hill, some of which are absolutely enormous in size! From the top of the hill, you also have a great view of the entire theatre in the surrounding landscape.
The ancient city of Aspendos is approximately 50 km east of Antalya.

Antalya, Turkey Travel Guide
My favorite city in Turkey is Antalya.
This is a warm little city, and the most bustling old town is only a dozen kilometers from the airport, making it very convenient to get around.
Here, I saw the best-preserved ancient theater of Aspendos, which is still in use today. You can hear sounds clearly from any corner of the theater without any amplification equipment. Behind the theater is an abandoned city, with only ruins remaining. I was amazed at how this theater survived the war.
Here, I saw the most beautiful Mediterranean Sea, with warm waters and majestic snow-capped mountains on the other side. Occasionally, a few cruise ships pass by, giving it a fairytale-like feel.
Here, I saw a bustling ancient city, with the still-standing Hadrian's Gate as the boundary. This gate is like a magical tool, with ancient and exquisite old houses inside and a bustling new city outside.
Here, we visited the Antalya Museum. Antalya was founded in ancient Greece, so this museum preserves many exquisite statues. The best part is that you can download an app with Chinese explanations.
There is also a small toy museum here, with exquisite toys from different periods. We met local children on a study tour, and they greeted us warmly.
Here, the most beautiful scenery is overlooking the entire city and the sea from the cable car, with a wide view and beautiful scenery. There is a drink shop on the mountain top, and Turkish black tea for just over a dollar is really affordable.
Here, we also experienced many stories. A friend's child had a problem with their braces, and we received help from many people. A driver who didn't speak a word of English communicated with us through body language and provided us with meticulous service. Someone would offer a helping hand when we were afraid to jump down the steps...
Here, in this small city, we found our own romance...

Aspendos Theater, near Antalya, was an incredible highlight of my summer trip! Located about 40 km east of Antalya, this well-preserved Roman theater has an entrance fee of around €8. It's renowned for its stunning acoustics and impressive architecture.
Walking through the theater felt like stepping back in time; the ancient stone seating and the grand stage are remarkably intact. The views from the top rows are breathtaking, and the overall atmosphere is awe-inspiring. Nearby, I also visited the ancient city of Perge, which complemented the historical experience perfectly.
Aspendos Theater is a must-see for history buffs and anyone interested in ancient architecture. 🎭🏛️

The vitality that has lasted for nearly two thousand years
The ancient Aspendos theater, not far from Antalya, was built in the second century AD and is the best-preserved ancient Roman theater, capable of accommodating fifteen thousand people.
From the stage's sound and lighting equipment, it can be seen that the ancient theater still frequently hosts performances. When we arrived, a group of students was visiting, and a middle-aged man who seemed to be a teacher recited a passage or poem on stage. The students responded to him from the stands, witnessing the vitality of the ancient theater.
The stage backdrop wall is relatively simple, built with neatly arranged stone blocks. It has two layers of eaves with intricately carved patterns. The triangular pediment in the middle of the second layer is engraved with Dionysus, the god of drama.
The most striking part is a row of arches (some of which are later additions) above the stands, arranged in a semicircle, elegant and magnificent. Behind the arches forms a curved corridor, where walking through it, one can feel the changes in light and shadow, as if a thousand years pass in an instant.
The scenic area is actually quite large, with many other ruins, but they are all very dilapidated, and the roads are difficult to walk, so there are almost no people. Therefore, most tourists spend only twenty to thirty minutes visiting the theater with the 15-euro ticket before finishing their tour.
