You cannot go to the crater, you can only go to the square on the top of the mountain. A one-day bus ticket costs 1,500 yen. We first went to the mountaintop square. It was windy and rainy, and visibility was only a few meters. The shrine on the mountain was relatively simple, and most people bought Kumamon souvenirs in the indoor shops. Unfortunately, on the last day on my way to the airport, it rained heavily and the JR Hohi Main Line's Higo-Otsu-Miyaji section was suspended (I only found out about this when I arrived at the station and didn't see any information about the suspension on the JR Kyushu website). As a result, there were more than ten people waiting for the train to Kumamoto Airport at Aso Station. Fortunately, I was able to get on the train successfully. Here is a brief introduction to the bus arrangements: you can use your IC card to get on and off the bus/buy your ticket at the Aso Station self-service machine/get a ticket on the bus and pay in cash when you get off. I heard that you can make reservations online, but I didn’t try it because of my sudden schedule.
