Ancient Aptera - Crete Island, Greece
The ruins of the ancient town of Aptera, located about 13.5 km east of Chania, are spread over two hills that rise majestically above Souda Bay. Founded in the 7th century BC, Aptera was one of the most important town-states of western Crete and grew steadily until an earthquake destroyed it in the 7th century AD. In the 10th century, with the advent of Byzantium, Aptera was revived and became a bishopric. In the XII century, the monastery of John the Evangelist was founded here, and now its reconstructed building is the central attraction of this settlement. There is no public transport in Aptera.
