[2025 Miyazaki Attraction] Travel Guide for Aoshima (Updated Jul)

Not Easter Island! This is Miyazaki, Kyushu, Japan! Summers in Miyazaki are as bright and beautiful as a Studio Ghibli film! Here's my one-day itinerary. Although I call it a day trip, I traveled from Oita to Miyazaki, arriving in the afternoon. Still, I made the most of it. For information on how to get to Miyazaki and must-see spots, please see below. ANA Holiday Inn Nichinan Sun Messe Park There's a bus stop right in front of the hotel. Be sure to sit on the left side of the bus on your way to Sun Messe Park for stunning views of the Nichinan Coast, including the unique natural wonder, the "Oni-no-Sentakuita" (Devil's Washboard) rock formations. Spend about an hour at Nichinan Sun Messe Park. Climb to the top for panoramic views, then head down to take photos with the Moai statues. This is the only place in the world authorized by Easter Island to replicate seven of these iconic figures. Nichinan Sun Messe Park - Aoshima Shrine Aoshima Shrine is uniquely situated on a small island, accessible by foot. Be mindful of the tide schedule and avoid visiting too late in the day. Known for its blessings for romantic relationships, the shrine is a popular destination for couples. After returning from the island, relax at the beach park and enjoy the sunset. Allow 1-1.5 hours for Aoshima Shrine, then return to the hotel for a hot spring soak and dinner. Food recommendations: Miyazaki beef, charcoal-grilled chicken, and fully ripened mangoes. This trip was a bit of a whirlwind tour, covering Kyushu in 7 days, leaving only one day for Miyazaki. If I had another day, I'd also visit: Takachiho Gorge, Udo Shrine, and Obi Castle. I'll save those for next time. If anyone goes, please share some photos! Public transportation in Miyazaki runs less frequently, so check the schedules in advance. Also, Miyazaki is hosting the "Miyazaki Food and Lantern Night" this year! This vibrant summer event runs from August 2nd to 18th. With around 10,000 colorful lanterns illuminating Miyazaki's nights, creating a magical atmosphere, the event also features the "National Food Expo 2024." Tachibana-dori Shopping Street: This is Miyazaki City's largest downtown area, with many unique restaurants and bars. Miyazaki Aoshima Island is different from Aoshima Island, famous for its cat island. This place is famous for its washboard beach, but instead of a sandy beach, the beach is like a washboard. The waves crash right next to the walking path, so it feels quite nice to walk. 😃 You can get to the island by crossing a bridge, not by boat. Aoshima Island is located in Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture. It has become very famous as a tourist spot. There is a place called Oni no Sentaku Iwa 👹, where the rock surface has been worn down by the waves and looks like a washing machine. In March 2025, I visited Aoshima in Miyazaki 🌴 Even in March, Kyushu had warm and pleasant weather ☀️ After paying my respects at Aoshima Shrine, I also stopped by the nearby Udo Shrine. Aoshima Shrine, a power spot for matchmaking Aoshima Shrine, a very popular power spot in Miyazaki Prefecture, is a mysterious shrine surrounded by the sea, perfect for Instagram. A spot packed with nature, mythology, and the benefits of matchmaking. A small island that stands alone along the coast of Miyazaki City. There is a bridge that you can walk to the island, and the view is especially spectacular at low tide! The contrast between the blue sky, sea, and white torii gates is amazing. When you cross the bridge, you will see a red torii gate and a vermilion-painted shrine building right in front of you. This is Aoshima Shrine. The vivid vermilion color stands out against the tropical green and is very beautiful! This shrine is connected to the myth of Yamasachihiko and Toyotamahime, and is said to bring good luck in matchmaking, love fulfillment, and safe childbirth. The fun is in the inner "Motomiya" After visiting the main shrine, be sure to visit the inner "Motomiya". It is a mystical place at the end of a small jungle-like approach to the shrine. We decided to rent a car and drove up to Miyazaki from Kagoshima so that we could drop by more locations! But this post will only cover places within Miyazaki - for full itinerary of our trip, maybe when we are done with the trip (because it's still on-going 😆) So here's what you can do if you have 3 days at Miyazaki! DAY 1: DAY TRIP TO UDO JINGU (Only do this if you drive!) Udo Jingu is sooo spectacular! I so love the sight of the sea!! We reached there (after leaving Kagoshima and stopping by 2 other places) at around 4+ in the late afternoon/evening so the sun and all was just *chefs kiss* DAY 2: EXPLORE MIYAZAKI 1. Miyazaki Jingu 2. Peace Tower Park 3. Miyazaki Station In no particular order, but do take note of the operating hours - especially for the Peace Tower Park, they close around 5pm. (and more importantly bus timings, their last bus leaves the park before 6pm!) We were supposed to be able to enter the Peace Tower, but it was closed due to the rain. We walked from Miyazaki Jingu to the Peace Tower Park, it is.... (kind of walkable) especially since we were walking in some light rain, but there is this long flight of stairs that we had to go up - so an alternative is to take the bus up! But their frequency may be one bus per hour, so do check their schedule! You'll pass by the Aoshima Beach before reaching the shrine as the shrine is on an island. You can spend some time on the beach then cross over to the shrine (or vice versa). After that, we went to Miyako Botanic Garden Aoshima. Went to visit the greenhouses and chilled at the cafe there while waiting for our train back to Miyazaki.
