[2025 Miyazaki Attraction] Travel Guide for Aoshima (Updated Aug)

Not Easter Island! This is Miyazaki, Kyushu, Japan! Summers in Miyazaki are as bright and beautiful as a Studio Ghibli film! Here's my one-day itinerary. Although I call it a day trip, I traveled from Oita to Miyazaki, arriving in the afternoon. Still, I made the most of it. For information on how to get to Miyazaki and must-see spots, please see below. ANA Holiday Inn Nichinan Sun Messe Park There's a bus stop right in front of the hotel. Be sure to sit on the left side of the bus on your way to Sun Messe Park for stunning views of the Nichinan Coast, including the unique natural wonder, the "Oni-no-Sentakuita" (Devil's Washboard) rock formations. Spend about an hour at Nichinan Sun Messe Park. Climb to the top for panoramic views, then head down to take photos with the Moai statues. This is the only place in the world authorized by Easter Island to replicate seven of these iconic figures. Nichinan Sun Messe Park - Aoshima Shrine Aoshima Shrine is uniquely situated on a small island, accessible by foot. Be mindful of the tide schedule and avoid visiting too late in the day. Known for its blessings for romantic relationships, the shrine is a popular destination for couples. After returning from the island, relax at the beach park and enjoy the sunset. Allow 1-1.5 hours for Aoshima Shrine, then return to the hotel for a hot spring soak and dinner. Food recommendations: Miyazaki beef, charcoal-grilled chicken, and fully ripened mangoes. This trip was a bit of a whirlwind tour, covering Kyushu in 7 days, leaving only one day for Miyazaki. If I had another day, I'd also visit: Takachiho Gorge, Udo Shrine, and Obi Castle. I'll save those for next time. If anyone goes, please share some photos! Public transportation in Miyazaki runs less frequently, so check the schedules in advance. Also, Miyazaki is hosting the "Miyazaki Food and Lantern Night" this year! This vibrant summer event runs from August 2nd to 18th. With around 10,000 colorful lanterns illuminating Miyazaki's nights, creating a magical atmosphere, the event also features the "National Food Expo 2024." Choose a local onsen ryokan (hot spring inn) and soak in the hot springs to relax and rejuvenate. Tachibana-dori Shopping Street: This is Miyazaki City's largest downtown area, with many unique restaurants and bars. Plan your itinerary reasonably: Plan your itinerary reasonably according to the bus schedule and the opening hours of the attractions to avoid missing exciting attractions. 2. 1. When you come to Miyazaki, you must see the sea. The Japanese Hawaii is really amazing. Route: Miyazaki Station West Exit - Aoshima - Sun Messe Nichinan - Udo Shrine - Miyazaki Station West Exit. Basically, it is a coastal route, and you can see the sea all the way. You must buy a VISIT MIYAZAKI BUS PASS before the trip, which costs JPY 2,000 and covers all transportation costs for the trip. You can buy it at the Miyazaki City Tourist Information Center (inside Miyazaki JR Station). 2. After asking us where we were going, the staff enthusiastically helped us design the route! Since there are fewer buses in Miyazaki, this is basically the best route. 3. We traveled on the weekend, so we looked at the weekend bus schedule (which is different from the weekday schedule!) Arrive at Miyazaki Station West Exit before 9:22 am. 9:22-10:08 am: Arrive at Aoshima. 10:08 am-12:38 pm: Play on Aoshima. Aoshima is a small island connected to the mainland by a bridge. There is a "Aoshima Shrine" on the island for praying for marriage, and there is also a paddle surfing school nearby. If you have enough time, you can try it. There are many delicacies near Aoshima, and we had Miyazaki beef for lunch. 12:38-13:07 pm: 13:07-15:17 pm: Play at Sun Messe Nichinan. Highly recommend Sun Messe Nichinan! If you can only choose one attraction in Miyazaki, it must be this one. Green and white, and the Easter Island Moai statues (claimed to be the only officially authorized replicas). It is both photogenic and comfortable, and I can stay there all day. 4. 15:17-15:22 pm: 15:22-16:42 pm: Play at Udo Shrine. Udo Shrine is a shrine by the sea. The main hall of the shrine is in a cave, and outside is the sea. This is amazing! It is so beautiful that I am reluctant to come back.

Blessed with rich nature, it has many subtropical plants such as birouju, giving it a tropical atmosphere. Aoshima Shrine, located in the center of the island, is very popular for its luck in finding love. The famous rock formations surrounding the island, the Oni no Sentakuita, are also a must-see. Aoshima Island is located in Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture. It has become very famous as a tourist spot. Aoshima Shrine, a power spot for matchmaking Aoshima Shrine, a very popular power spot in Miyazaki Prefecture, is a mysterious shrine surrounded by the sea, perfect for Instagram. A spot packed with nature, mythology, and the benefits of matchmaking. A small island that stands alone along the coast of Miyazaki City. There is a bridge that you can walk to the island, and the view is especially spectacular at low tide! The contrast between the blue sky, sea, and white torii gates is amazing. When you cross the bridge, you will see a red torii gate and a vermilion-painted shrine building right in front of you. This is Aoshima Shrine. The vivid vermilion color stands out against the tropical green and is very beautiful! This shrine is connected to the myth of Yamasachihiko and Toyotamahime, and is said to bring good luck in matchmaking, love fulfillment, and safe childbirth. The fun is in the inner "Motomiya" After visiting the main shrine, be sure to visit the inner "Motomiya". It is a mystical place at the end of a small jungle-like approach to the shrine. We decided to rent a car and drove up to Miyazaki from Kagoshima so that we could drop by more locations! But this post will only cover places within Miyazaki - for full itinerary of our trip, maybe when we are done with the trip (because it's still on-going 😆) So here's what you can do if you have 3 days at Miyazaki! DAY 1: DAY TRIP TO UDO JINGU (Only do this if you drive!) Udo Jingu is sooo spectacular! I so love the sight of the sea!! We reached there (after leaving Kagoshima and stopping by 2 other places) at around 4+ in the late afternoon/evening so the sun and all was just *chefs kiss* DAY 2: EXPLORE MIYAZAKI 1. Miyazaki Jingu 2. Peace Tower Park 3. Miyazaki Station In no particular order, but do take note of the operating hours - especially for the Peace Tower Park, they close around 5pm. (and more importantly bus timings, their last bus leaves the park before 6pm!) We were supposed to be able to enter the Peace Tower, but it was closed due to the rain. We walked from Miyazaki Jingu to the Peace Tower Park, it is.... (kind of walkable) especially since we were walking in some light rain, but there is this long flight of stairs that we had to go up - so an alternative is to take the bus up! But their frequency may be one bus per hour, so do check their schedule! Same for the buses leaving the park 😊 We left Miyazaki Station for the last because that was the most convenient route for us (to go back to the hotel) and also the malls and stores around there open till later (past 8pm). DAY 3: AOSHIMA 1. Aoshima Beach (while walking to Aoshima Shrine) 2. Aoshima Shrine 3. Miyako Botanic Garden Aoshima We headed to Aoshima from Miyazaki station by train - again, the train runs once every hour so do take note of the train schedule! The train ride is around 30-ish minutes. We grabbed lunch once we arrived at Aoshima Station, then walked to the Aoshima Shrine. You'll pass by the Aoshima Beach before reaching the shrine as the shrine is on an island. You can spend some time on the beach then cross over to the shrine (or vice versa). After that, we went to Miyako Botanic Garden Aoshima. Went to visit the greenhouses and chilled at the cafe there while waiting for our train back to Miyazaki. #Spring0yenTrip Aoshima is a famous tourist spot in Miyazaki, about 30 minutes from Miyazaki City. Unfortunately it was raining on the day I visited, but I was thrilled to see the "Devil's Washing Rock", where the coastline is jagged like a washboard, a rare subtropical rainforest on the mainland, and the beautiful Aoshima Shrine. There is also something like a botanical garden nearby where you can observe plants that can only be seen in tropical and subtropical regions. There are also several restaurants, and the food was delicious. It is also just a short walk from the JR station, so if you visit Miyazaki, please be sure to check it out.
