Sapphire Shores & Secret Bays: My Solo Escape to the Ionian Sea
#mytraveldiary
I just sailed, swam, and wandered through the Ionian Islands—a paradise where cypress-covered cliffs meet turquoise water, and where history, music, and Mediterranean flavors come together under the sun. It was the ultimate solo escape for island-hopping, reflection, and pure joy.
What Makes the Ionian Sea Special?
· Seven Main Islands:
· Corfu: Lush landscapes, Venetian architecture, and vibrant culture.
· Kefalonia: Dramatic coastlines, Myrtos Beach, and underground lakes.
· Zakynthos: Famous Shipwreck Beach (Navagio) and caretta-caretta turtles.
· Lefkada: Connected to the mainland by a bridge—easy access and windsurfing mecca.
· Ithaca: Mythical home of Odysseus—quiet and deeply spiritual.
· Paxos & Antipaxos: Tiny gems with olive groves, blue caves, and crystal waters.
· Music & Arts: Corfu and Zakynthos have strong musical and cultural traditions.
· Italian Influence: Venetian castles, pasta dishes, and elegant piazzas set it apart from other Greek isles.
· Sailing Paradise: Calm waters and steady winds make it ideal for solo sailors or boat tours.
Why the Ionian for Solo Travelers?
· Safe & Welcoming: Friendly locals, well-connected ferries, and tourist infrastructure.
· Variety of Experiences: From nightlife in Corfu to solitude in Ithaca.
· Easy Island-Hopping: Regular ferries connect the islands—no need for a car.
· Outdoor Adventures: Hiking, diving, sailing, and swimming with turtles.
