Schedule
Day 1
Take the Keio Bus from Shinjuku to Nagano Station.
From Nagano Station, take a local bus to Zenkoji Temple.
After praying, we had oyaki (sweet dumplings). We had chestnut bean paste oyaki, a fall-only treat, at Irohado. The sweet potato filling is also fall-only.
Take the Nagano Electric Railway from Nagano Station to Obuse Station. It takes about 30 minutes. From the station, we headed to our inn, Masuichi Kyakuden. It was about a 10-minute walk. At the inn, we received a voucher for Suzaku, a freshly picked autumn treat made from pureed, unsweetened chestnuts topped with chestnut paste.
This is a special treat for guests, available only from September 10th to October 16th.
We enjoyed a special table on the second floor of the Ichimura family's main residence, Obusedo Honten. There was no time limit, so we leisurely enjoyed Suzaku while enjoying refills of roasted green tea. It was absolutely delicious!
After checking in at Masuichi Kyakuden, we were treated to a welcome dessert of Kariyama, a pureed chestnut and bean paste confection. It was elegant and delicious.
Masuichi Kyakuden offers drink service until 7pm, and we ordered Obuse apple juice as room service.
In the evening, we enjoyed a Japanese course meal featuring chestnuts and other dishes at the Obusedo Honten restaurant. Dinner is only available to guests staying overnight, and is only available with a dinner plan that includes dinner. We enjoyed a dinner that truly immersed us in autumn, with dishes like pureed chestnuts topped with lily root and other ingredients, chestnut tempura, chestnut rice, Shinshu pork, and autumnal mushroom dishes.
Day 2
Breakfast was for hotel guests at Kanpurou. It was a Western-style meal with a variety of egg dishes, and we ordered eggs Benedict. Obuse milk and Obuse yogurt were also offered as part of the course.
Guests at Masuichi Kyakuden can participate in Obusedo's pop-up event at any time. Normally, this is only available when eating Suzaku. At this pop-up event, we had chestnut shaved ice, which was also delicious!
After checking out of the inn at 12 o'clock, we wandered around the chestnut confectionery shops. There were several, including one selling fresh chestnuts. And in autumn, grapes are also popular. Shinano Purple and Muscat grapes were sold everywhere. Obuse also has grape fields.
Afterward, we enjoyed chestnut oshiruko (sweet red bean soup) at Sakurai Kanseido. We then bought a bunch of autumn delicacies, including chestnut yokan (sweet bean jelly), fresh chestnuts, grapes, and apple jam, before hopping on the train to Nagano Station. We ate soba noodles with walnut sauce at a soba restaurant called Kusabue near the station, then took the 5:00 PM bus home.
Note: Reservations for Masuichi Kyakuden during chestnut season open six months in advance. If you book the Suzaku plan or dinner plan in advance, you can enjoy your meal at your leisure.
