Mount Tanigawa
Mount Tanigawa (谷川岳, Tanigawa-dake), located on the border between Gunma and Niigata Prefectures, is a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts in Japan. Here’s an overview of hiking Mount Tanigawa:
Hiking Trails
1. Hiking Routes:
• Tanigawadake Ropeway Trail: This is a popular route that starts from the Tanigawadake Ropeway station. You can take the ropeway up to the 1,400-meter elevation and then hike to the summit. This route is more accessible and recommended for less experienced hikers.
• Yubiso Trail: For a more challenging hike, the Yubiso Trail starts from the Yubiso area. It’s a strenuous trail that takes you through beautiful forests and rugged terrain before reaching the summit.
• Furepe Pass Trail: This trail connects the summit to Furepe Pass and offers scenic views along the way. It’s a good option for those seeking a more extended hike.
2. Difficulty Levels:
• Beginner-Friendly: The ropeway-assisted routes are suitable for beginners and those looking for a less demanding hike.
• Intermediate to Advanced: The Yubiso Trail and other direct routes to the summit are more challenging, requiring good physical fitness and hiking experience.
Seasonal Considerations
• Summer (June to August): Ideal for hiking, with relatively stable weather and clear trails. However, it can be crowded.
• Autumn (September to November): Offers beautiful autumn foliage and cooler temperatures, but weather conditions can be unpredictable, so be prepared for possible rain and wind.
• Winter (December to February): Popular among experienced hikers and mountaineers for winter climbs, but trails can be icy and require proper equipment.
Safety Tips
• Weather: Check the weather forecast before your hike, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
• Gear: Wear appropriate hiking gear, including sturdy boots, warm clothing, and rain gear.
• Navigation: Bring a map or GPS device, as trails can be challenging and markers might be scarce.
Access
• By Train: Take the JR Joetsu Line to Minakami Station. From there, you can take a bus or taxi to the Tanigawadake Ropeway station or other trailheads.
• By Car: Parking is available at the base of the mountain, though it can be limited during peak seasons.
Mount Tanigawa offers a range of hiking experiences from accessible day trips to challenging multi-day hikes. Enjoy the breathtaking views, diverse landscapes, and natural beauty of this impressive mountain!

A magnificent symbol of the north
Mount Tanigawa is a 1,977 meter high peak in the north of Gunma Prefecture and one of the highest points of the Tanigawa Mountain Range. It is one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan. Climbing enthusiasts often come here: you can climb Tanigawa in one day.
How to get there
It takes 20 minutes by bus from JR Minakami Station (Joetsu Line), and just under an hour from Jomo-Kogen. Hiking enthusiasts can drive to JR Doai Station (two stops after Minakami on the same line) and walk 1.3 kilometers to the cable car.
Beauty and variability
Mount Tanigawa is located in the Joshinetsu-kogen National Park on the border of Gunma and Niigata prefectures. The Tanigawa Mountain range separates the southern (washed by the Pacific Ocean) and northern (washed by the Sea of Japan) parts of the country, so there are sudden sharp weather changes.
At any time of the year
Most of the year, the top of Mount Tanigawa is abundantly covered with snow, and very beginners and not very experienced skiers like to come here. When the snow melts, cherry blossoms paint the slopes in bright shades of pink, and in autumn the mountain turns orange-red from the foliage. There are always enough people who want to admire the beauty of nature.
In summer, those who want to escape from the scorching heat for a day come. The Tanigawa Cable Car takes you up to the Tenjindaira Ski Resort and takes in the rocky scenery.
Safety first
Despite the fact that Mount Tanigawa is noticeably lower than such giants as Fuji or the Yatsugatake Mountain range, it is not at all easy to climb to its top. If you decide to do this, do not forget about the appropriate equipment and carefully study the route.
The main danger is avalanches, so in winter only experienced professional climbers are allowed to climb to the top.
