2025 Meteora Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in October)

Meteora is located near the town of Kalambaka in central Greece. The six monasteries (of an original twenty-four built between the 13th and 14th centuries) are built on immense natural pillars and hill-like rounded boulders that dominate the local area. We took a very early 5 hour train ride from Athens and reached Kalambaka by noon where we joined a 4 hour tour which we bought a day before in Athens. Upon arriving, we were met by our tour guide who took a small group of us tourists around the Meteora area in a van. We also managed to enter and tour one of the larger monasteries. Bear in mind that to enter one of these amazing monasteries, you need to wear a skirt or wear a scarf around your waist would do the job just fine. It was a long train ride to and fro but you get to see countryside Greece and I wouldn’t miss seeing this beautiful place while in Greece. It was simply amazing!

Meteora was designated as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage site in 1988. In Greek, the word 'Meteora' means 'suspended in the air' or 'above the sky,' which is why it is often referred to as the Sky City. From the caves built by monks in the 11th century for seclusion to the monasteries constructed in the 14th century to escape the Islamic rule of the Turks, Meteora once boasted up to 24 monasteries atop its rock pillars during its peak. Today, only six of them remain active. If you opt for a one-day tour, it takes about four hours by car to reach the destination. On the day of the tour, you will typically visit all the monasteries open to the public, spending approximately 45 minutes at each. Including time for queuing, exploring, and taking photos, the schedule is just right. For monasteries that are not open, the itinerary will include time to view them from a distance. The tour also includes a visit to the observation deck, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the aerial monasteries and take plenty of photos before heading back. If you want to explore different aspects of Greece, this Sky City is undoubtedly a great choice.

#SkyCity #couplestrip #greece We visited the six monasteries of Meteora, the "Sky City," and I wanted to share our experience! 😉 Time: The six monasteries are closed Monday through Friday. If you want to see all six, plan your trip for Saturday and Sunday. It's best to stay overnight in Kalakaba. Accommodation there is far more affordable than in Taiwan! 😍 Transportation: We chose the train. You can pre-purchase tickets a month in advance on the National Railways website. You can choose your seat in A or B class and receive an e-ticket via email. No need to print it out. You can board directly on the platform. The conductor will scan your ticket. The train departed on time from Larissa Station in Athens. Currently, there are no direct trains to Kalakaba, so you must get off at Paleofarsalos Station. After exiting the station (follow the crowds), you'll find a shuttle bus to Kalakaba. Journey time: 3 hours by train, 2 hours by bus! 😋Car Rental: After arriving in Kallangcaba, walk about 10 minutes into the city and find a rental agency (I recommend Hobby Shop) to rent a 125cc motorcycle for 30 euros for 24 hours. The agency will verify your international driver's license is Category A, but seeing that you're Taiwanese is reassuring! Each monastery has parking, but on Saturdays and Sundays, it's hard to find a spot even at the largest parking lot, Great Meteoron, and you might have to park far away. We rode our motorcycles directly to the nearest entrance, which was quite refreshing! 😘Tickets: Entrance to each monastery is 5 euros. Credit cards are accepted at Great Meteoron, but all others accept cash. Most monasteries sell souvenirs, but they may not accept credit cards, so it's best to have cash on hand. 😁Dress: Women must wear a below-the-knee skirt, and men must wear long pants. Otherwise, you'll be asked to wear a free scarf or shirt at the entrance. You don't have to climb St. Stephen's, but all five require climbing, so it's recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring plenty of water! 😜 All the monasteries and two viewpoints are located along the mountain road, which is wide, flat, and not very winding, making it difficult to get lost. The scenery is stunning at every turn, and motorcyclists can easily stop and take photos. I hope the above sharing is helpful for those planning a trip!

This place, where nature and faith blend seamlessly, truly feels like one of Greece's hidden miracles 💫 There are six monasteries in total, each with its own unique charm. Climbing up to them is enjoyable, but be prepared for lots of stairs, so comfortable walking shoes are a must 👟💦 No matter where you look, the views are stunning, and the sight of the sun setting behind the rocky mountains at dusk is breathtakingly beautiful 🌅📸 We also stopped by the town of Kalambaka for lunch and leisurely enjoyed our time in Meteora ☕️🍅 Though the journey was a bit challenging, the sense of accomplishment and awe from driving ourselves made it all the more worthwhile.
