On Managua’s central trunk road and lakeside plaza are the impressive rainbow art trees, formally known locally as the “Trees of Life”, these man-made trees are huge in various shapes, colorful and beautiful in color schemes. Made of metal and decorated with a large number of small colored bulbs, these “trees of life” are around 12 to 17 meters tall, totaling about 130. The art trees were inspired by the 1909 work by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt titled The Tree of Life (Stoclet Frieze). Each tree costs $20,000-$30,000 to build, with $1 million in electricity and maintenance a year.
