2024 Lucerne Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
Lucerne means “City of Lights” and, according to legend, was established by an angel’s request. On the shores of Lake Lucerne with heartbreaking views of the Alps, Lucerne has been attracting tourists for centuries, prompting Mark Twain to observe that “the shops are packed with Alpine crystals. Photographs of scenery, and wooden and ivory carvings...Millions of them.” Stroll across the historic wooden Chapel Bridge, one of Lucerne’s landmarks, and if possible visit during the city’s carnival season, which features extravagant parades in which you march “where you like.”

Roaming streets of Luzern
#100waysoftravel Lucerne is surrounded by stunning landscapes, including Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps. The city’s waterfront, with the famous Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) and the Water Tower, is one of the most photographed spots in Switzerland. Lucerne has a well-preserved medieval old town with charming cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and beautiful churches. I love their historical architecture 😍 The city also has several museums, such as the Swiss Transport Museum and the Richard Wagner Museum. #familytravel
Do you want to stay in Swiss Chateau?
#100waysoftravel
I would visit and grab a drink/dinner but I wouldn’t ever stay here again. As recorded as a 4 star hotel the place is a beautiful Chateau with great views of downtown Lucern. Also, as a recorded 4 star hotel, the reception staff lacked any sort of personality and weren’t very friendly, they didn’t even recognize us and asked if we were staying at the hotel multiple times… the hotel isn’t very big…
The bar staff were friendly!! Again, reason to come and have a drink and take in the views.
Lucerne, Switzerland: The Bridges of Madison County, the European Town with Mountains and Rivers!
Lucerne, also translated as "Luzern," is the capital of the canton of Lucerne, located in central Switzerland. Known as the most beautiful and ideal tourist city in Switzerland, it is also the most popular Swiss resort. 🏞️🇨🇭
Lake Lucerne
Lake Lucerne, also known as the Vierwaldstättersee, is the fourth largest lake in Switzerland and the first lake entirely located in Switzerland. The shoreline of Lake Lucerne twists and turns, giving rise to many forks that connect the city of Lucerne to the surrounding peaks. 🌊🏔️
Mount Rigi
Known as the Queen of the Mountains, Mount Rigi offers a 360-degree view of the Swiss Alps, the idyllic landscape below, as well as 13 lakes, and even views of France and Germany. It's a great place to watch sunrises and sunsets, and in winter, you can often see breathtaking cloud formations. 🌅❄️
Chapel Bridge
The Chapel Bridge, also known as the Kapellbrücke, is the symbol of Lucerne and the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe. Walking here at dusk, you can still enjoy a romantic medieval feeling in Lucerne. Today, the Chapel Bridge is still an indispensable sight on Lucerne postcards. 🌉📸
Hof Church
Hof Church, also known as the Hofkirche, with the full name of the Church of St. Leodegar, is now Lucerne's most important church and the residents' center of faith. It is also a place for church music performances. ⛪🎶

The Dust-Free Realm by Lake Lucerne | Lucerne, Switzerland
| Lucerne, Switzerland. The history of the town of Lucerne dates back to the Roman times, also known as 'Lucerne'. Under the blue sky and white clouds, romantic love is performed to death here, and the inspiration of literati bursts forth: Mark Twain's 'A Tramp Abroad', Tolstoy's 'Lucerne', and Zhu Ziqing's 'Impressions of Europe' were all written here. Medieval churches and covered bridges, Renaissance palaces and city walls, ancient streets and alleys full of art and life, and colorful, elegant, and artistic murals~
Chapel Bridge: Known as the landmark of Lucerne, built in 1333, it is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe. On the transom of the bridge, there are more than 100 paintings depicting religious, historical, and character stories.
Octagonal Water Tower: Located next to the Chapel Bridge, built around 1300.
Church of St. Leodegar: Also known as the Hof Church, located on the north shore of Lake Lucerne, its two Gothic spires are particularly eye-catching, mixed with Baroque style.
The Dying Lion: 'Dedicated to the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss', Mark Twain called it 'the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.'
Old Town: Retains the medieval look and atmosphere. You can enjoy the colorful historical buildings, such as the town hall, Jesuit church, and the Rosengart Museum.
Lake Lucerne: One of the largest and most beautiful lakes in Switzerland.

Where to get nice chocolate in Swiss?
📍Bachmann Confectionary, Lucerne
(Schwanenpl. 7, 6004 Luzern, Switzerland)
As a sweet-toothed traveler wandering through the picturesque streets of Lucerne, stumbling upon Bachmann Confectionary was like finding a hidden treasure. Right beside the serene Lucerne Lake, this family-run gem has been crafting some of the most delightful chocolates, pastries, and baked goods I've ever had the pleasure of tasting.🤩🤩
🍫
Walking into Bachmann, the aroma of chocolates attractedme. The display is a feast for the eyes, with truffles, pralines, and seasonal specialties laid out like precious jewels.
☕️
To me, the real star of the show was their hot chocolate drink – it was absolutely delicious. Creamy, rich, and just the right amount of sweet, it was the perfect treat to enjoy in such a lovely setting!😍😍
Bachmann isn't just a confectionary; it's a slice of Lucerne's culinary heart, offering a warm welcome to anyone who walks through its doors. For fellow travelers in search of the sweet essence of Swiss hospitality, this spot beside Lucerne Lake is an absolute must-visit.
Don’t forget to get a hot chocolate!☕️😇

Exploring Lucerne City
#citywalk
Our customers and us had a weekend free before our business trip and thus we ventured to Lucerne City Of Switzerland for a short trip.
When we reached there, one of the first things that captivated was the Lucerne lake with the mountains as the background. It looked so picturesque. The scenery was further beautified by the Chapel Bridge. We took a walk around the Old Town and totally immersed in the scenery. We also got to view the Lion Monument.
Hotel Bellevue In Lucerne
#hotelreview
My customers, my boss and I went to Lucerne Switzerland for a short weekend trip. As expenses are costly in Lucerne, we wanna save some money on accommodate. As the time line was tight, we don't have much choices which fit our criteria. In the end, we managed to find Bellevue Hotel.
The room we booked fit 4 for us. It has a bunk bed and double bed. The bed themselves were quite comfortable. Location wise, it's a 10 plus minutes ride from the train station. However, there is not much supermarkets nearby withhin walking distance. One thing to note is the room does not have air con. Thus you have to depend on the fan for cooling when you come during the summer.
Luzern
Getting There - Train: Zurich Airport to Luzern
Attractions - Chapel bridge, Männliturm
Hotels - i won’t recommend the place I stayed in because it’s a normal one.
Food & Restaurants - Co-op
If you are on a budget trip, it’s better to get food from the supermarket to save your money.
I spent three days in Luzern because I was going to the alps nearby, Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Titlis. Luzern is a popular place to stay in for convenience to the alps.
Best viewpoint in Lucerne 🇨🇭 during winter
One of the most iconic landmarks that you should not miss in Lucerne is the Musegg Wall built in the 14th century. It is about 15 minutes walk from Lucerne train station. As the wall is located on a hill so be prepared to climb stairs and slopes. There are 9 watchtowers along the 870-m long city wall, 4 of which are open to public (free admission) during non-winter months.
We were not able to walk on the city wall as we visited during winter so we explored the area inside the city wall. A local that we met suggested that we walked along the outer wall to have a great view of the city. We were indeed greeted with panoramic views of Lucerne city with a backdrop of Lake Lucerne and Swiss Alps as we explored the area outside the wall. Make sure to climb the watch towers if you visit during summer as I'm sure the views from the watch towers will be even more spectacular!

When in Switzerland, choose Lucerne 😁
Stroll around in Lucerne for coffee and enjoy the beauty of the town just by walking. Do not skip the Lion Monument which will take around 20-30 minutes slow walk. Walk pass the old bridge and enjoy the river view with the mountain's scenery at the back. Craving for rice in Lucerne - head to Thai Palace restaurant in the middle of the city with tasty bento curry chicken. just yummy#celebratewithtrip

Chapel Bridge
#celebratewithtrip
We visited world's oldest truss bridge and happily ticked one item off our bucket list. What's more to say, the main landmark in Luzern. This bridge restored after a fire in the 90s still has some of the original paintings left in it. It's at the centre of town connecting the two banks and looks wonderful with the water tower beside it. Beautiful ambience. A bridge on a river with colourful flowers surrounded.

The Top Attractions In Luzern, Switzerland
If you ask me which part of Switzerland I love, I can outright say not Zurich for sure but its either interlaken or luzern. Interlaken is more towards the nature settings with glorious mountain backdrops.
Luzern city itself is filled with many historical attractions with stories too! 1 of which is the Chapel Bridge, where the bridge had a major restoration due to a big fire in 1993 which is also written as part of the story in the Chapel bridge information.
Not too far off there is also the lion monument where this is a carved stone dying lion to attribute the 1792 tuileries war. There is also the hofkirche st. leodegar Catholic Church which is a old 18th century Church that is beautifully built and still standing tall and gorgeous.

A must visit place for transport fan
Experience the past, present and future of mobility in Switzerland's most-visited museum.
There are a lot of interactive guides and exhibits to let visitors understand the history of transport (from road, rail, water, air and space). The collection of more than 3,000 items is presented in more than 20,000m2 of exhibition space. The large outdoor area complete with lake and playing facilities make it an experience whatever the weather.
At the end of the tour, you must visit The Lindt Boutique in the museum shop. It's not only the place for chocolate lovers but also to see the interesting chocolate modelled after the transport theme here.

Monument to commemorate the Swiss Guards
The Lion Monument is dedicated to the memory of the Swiss mercenaries who, in the service of Louis XVI King of France, were killed during the French Revolution in Paris when the Tuileries were invaded on August 10, 1792, or who were guillotined on September 2nd/3rd, 1792.
The Palais des Tuileries was the seat of Louis XVI after he had left Versailles.
The inscription "Helvetiorum fidei ac virtuti" means "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss".
It is important to know that, in addition to agriculture and town-crafts, the mercenaries' service was an important and gainful trade at the time of the Ancient Confederation. At the beginning of the French Revolution, in 1789,
about 40000 Swiss were serving under foreign banners.

Swiss summery vibes
Switzerland in summer is an absolute joy and pleasure. The land that's known for its crystal clear lakes and scenic mountains are all that more spectacular in summer. This is especially true in Lucern. A small city around an hour's train ride from Zurich, you are immediately thrown into the laid-back and relaxed Swiss summer that somehow does wonders for mental health. The town is backdropped against beautiful mountains and a blue lake. You can even swim in the lake, although you'd have to walk around 15-20 mins outside of the city center to do so. The water absolutely made my skin feel smooth and silky. The city center is fun to walk around and you feel like you're inside a postcard.
#tripaway Lucerne in Switzerland is an oasis of peace and quietude! is a paradise for photography! such a beautiful city with incredible landscapes like out of a movie! the lake, the mountains, the valleys, everything is just perfect! blue skies and good weather during spring time! absolutely recommended! #lucerne #switzerland #europe

It’s overlooking alphachersee. The wind on the mountain is unpredictable. The train to the base of Pilatus is covered by the swiss travel pass, but the cog wheel train and gondola are not (but you get a discount). Both up and down are great rides in themselves, and there is some super hiking at the top (the flower trail is the best), and half way down the east (?) side is a summer toboggan run. I highly recommend

Luzern is one of popular cities in Switzerland. So many landmarks and places of interest to be explored. The Chapel Bridge with the Water Tower is the landmark of Lucern. Lake Luzern Cruise is a must try. The smallest Renaissance Hotel in the world also located in Luzern, where we stayed. The closest hotel to main station is Monopol (very beautiful facade indeed)
