Return to the Ruins: My Third Pilgrimage to Gwrych Castle
#hellohalloween
By the third visit, Gwrych Castle no longer feels like a destination—it feels like a quiet confidant. Each return uncovers something new, not just in the ruins, but in me. The castle, with its crumbling towers and whispering winds, has become a mirror of solitude, strength, and slow healing.
Itinerary
Day 1 – The Familiar Path
Arrived early, and the walk up the familiar gravel path felt comforting, like tracing an old memory. The ivy-covered archways welcomed me back, the stones unchanged yet somehow softer in their silence. I lingered longer this time—no camera, no rush—just the sound of footsteps and birds weaving through history. Evening settled gently over Abergele, where I stayed in a cozy inn I now think of as “my place.”
Day 2 – Conversations with Stillness
The morning mist wrapped the castle in a dreamy veil. I sat on a fallen wall overlooking the valley, journaling thoughts that only solitude could summon. Later, I joined a volunteer’s talk on the castle’s ongoing restoration—seeing hope rise from brokenness felt deeply symbolic. After lunch, I wandered up the woodland trail to Coed y Gopa, where light streamed through the canopy like quiet blessings.
Day 3 – Farewell, Yet Not Goodbye
Before leaving, I walked one last round of the courtyard, touching the cool stone walls as if to say thank you. Gwrych has become my retreat, a place where silence doesn’t ask for answers—it just listens. Watching the sun break through the ruins, I realized I’ll return again, not to see what’s changed, but to see how I have.
