The Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop is truly a perfect self-drive route, easily manageable in almost any type of vehicle. Along the way, you'll encounter mountains, grasslands, lakes, salt lakes, Gobi Desert, deserts, Yadan landforms, Danxia landforms, snow-capped mountains, historical sites, and delicious food. The journey is incredibly rich and diverse, and even after the trip, the most beautiful scenery feels like it was on the road itself. Every day, the stunning views along the way slowed us down, tempting us to stop for photos and fly our drone. We went at the peak season at the end of July, but there were still some routes where we were completely alone, driving through endless Gobi or grasslands, feeling utterly free. The afterglow is intense, and I highly recommend a self-drive trip. Since we had a sedan, we chose not to go there. Some less-traveled routes might also have slightly worse road conditions. Always prioritize safety. ⛱️Must-see attractions: You can choose attractions based on your preferences, but the most beautiful scenery is truly on the road. Throughout the trip, we visited three salt lakes and various other attractions, but looking back, the best memories are from driving through the grasslands, along the lakes, and across the Gobi. 🏨Accommodation guide: It's fine during the off-season, but during peak season, it's recommended to plan your route and book accommodations in advance on Trip.com. The guesthouses and accommodations near Lenghu Town and Qinghai Lake might have slightly poorer conditions. There are many more options once you reach Dunhuang. 💗Other tips: We were on a ten-day self-drive tour, following the planned itinerary strictly for the first few days, and then making daily plans as we went. I recommend at least seven days for this trip, otherwise, the driving will wear you out. Even with a ten-day itinerary, we missed out on many things, such as tickets to the Mogao Caves and horseback riding at Shandan Horse Ranch. The rape flowers were also at the end of their season, which was a pity. But these are motivations for another trip around the loop. Also, the lamb in Dunhuang is particularly delicious, especially at a restaurant called Shouzhua Yangrou Yijue (手抓羊肉一觉). The Shazhou Night Market is a bit pricey, but the food is indeed delicious, and it's all concentrated in one place, making it convenient for tourists to try a variety of dishes.

However, such a moment is rare, so a sunny day is also fine. The ticket is valid for two days. On the second day, you only need to buy a bus ticket to enter. If you plan to visit again on the second day, inform the ticket seller when purchasing the ticket, and they will stamp it for the next day. Otherwise, you will need to buy a new ticket to enter on the second day. The buses stop at four viewing stations regardless of which gate you enter from, and they do not stop midway. The difference is only in the order of the stops. The shuttle buses run counterclockwise. We made a Trip to Zhangye in Gansu province to see the spectacular rainbow mountains with our own eyes. We flew from Beijing Daxing airport and it took 2:45 hours to get to Zhangye. On arrival we found our hotel and it was just by a food market, we had lunch and breakfast here during our stay. We were five persons traveling together so we asked our hotel to arrange trips for us around Zhangye. They had a mini bus to take us around. First stop: 🌈 Rainbow mountains We had certain expectations and were not disappointed. You can actually see the colors in the mountains. Its reddish sandstone that has been eroded to create magnificent rock formations with gorgeous colors over billions of years. By entrance of the park we had to take a bus to the different viewing points. Second stop: Bingguo Danxia landform Bingguo is the lesser known Danxia in the shadow of Rainbow mountain with less colors, mainly red. However we found it extremely cool to do a 3 hour hike in this spectacular landscape. Third stop: Giant Buddha temple With the largest sleeping Buddha in China. My night stay in the yurts in the Rainbow Mountains was absolutely incredible. The location is unbeatable, as it's very close to the scenic spot and provides a stunning view of the stars at night. The hotpot was also a highlight, as it was delicious and provided a perfect way to warm up after a long day of hiking. The yurts were heated with electric blankets and super cozy. A shared shower and toilet yes but they were incredible clean and not far from our yurt. If you're in the region, I highly recommend visiting Jupiter Valley, also known as Extraterrestrial or Alien Valley on CTrip. The 100 RMB per person fee is well worth it, as the valley is truly a unique and otherworldly experience. The surreal landscape, with its towering rock formations and vibrant colors, is like nothing else on Earth. It's also conveniently located close to all the other spots worth seeing in the area. Overall, my night stay in the yurts and visit to Jupiter Valley were unforgettable experiences that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting the region.
