Cheers to Flavor: Celebrating Oktoberfest with Local Brews and Traditional Tuak
#oktoberfest #100waysoftravel #sarawak
We love heading to the Spring Oktoberfest celebration, where there's an impressive variety of food and beers to enjoy. One of our top recommendations is the locally brewed craft beer from Kuching, which boasts a refreshing array of fruity notes and aromatic flavors that perfectly suit the festive vibe. And, of course, no Oktoberfest experience in Kuching would be complete without trying tuak,a traditional rice wine made by the indigenous communities of Sarawak. This unique drink is often enjoyed during celebrations and has a sweet, fruity taste with a mild alcoholic kick. The apple tusk is my personal favorite, adding a crisp twist to this regional classic.
Adventure Awaits: Camping in Kuching's Hidden Gem, Kampung Sting
#campingfun #100waysoftravel #sarawak #borneo
One of our favorite camping sites in Kuching is Kampung Sting, where we stayed at Kiyau Campsite. Kiyau Campsite offers a range of accommodation options, including chalets, tents, and domes, providing flexibility for different camping styles. Both Kampung Sting and the scenic Bengoh Dam are located along the same route, making it convenient for visitors who want to explore both areas.
Most visitors opt for a 2-day, 1-night stay to fully experience the stunning landscape. We arrived at the parking lot at the base of village , where we waited for the 4 wheel drive transfer. For those unfamiliar with the route, taking a transfer is recommended, as the narrow mountain roads are steep and winding, which can be challenging for regular vehicles.
I flew to this lesser-known city just for these photos.
While Kuching may be familiar to Malaysians, it is relatively unknown in mainland China. I found very few online discussions about Kuching, and almost no one from mainland China visits. During my five-day stay, I noticed that most tourists were from Europe, America, and Taiwan, with very few from mainland China. However, I highly recommend this city for two reasons: the people are warm and friendly, and there is an abundance of delicious food at very affordable prices, likely among the lowest in Malaysia.
Thrills and Tradition: The Excitement of Padawan Raft Safari
#rafting #100waysoftravel
Padawan Raft Safari is one of my favorite events in Kuching, where the excitement of rafting meets the charm of the local countryside. The race starts from Kampung Danu and ends at Kampung Git, with participants paddling their homemade bamboo rafts through the winding rivers. The journey is filled with thrilling rapids, serene stretches of water, and breathtaking views of lush tropical forests. The event is a lively celebration, drawing in crowds to cheer on the teams. It’s a perfect blend of adventure and community spirit, and we always enjoy the festive atmosphere surrounding it!
Conquering Mount Santubong: A Local Favorite Hiking Trail in Kuching
#hikingtrails #100waysoftravel #kuching #sarawak #santubong
One of the favorite hiking trails for locals in Kuching is the challenging trek up Mount Santubong. Rising 810 meters above sea level, the trail offers a rewarding experience, with lush rainforest, diverse wildlife, and stunning views of the South China Sea. The hike starts with a moderate incline but quickly turns steep, requiring ropes and ladders to navigate rocky terrain. I almost felt half-dead tackling the tough sections, but the hidden waterfalls and tropical birds along the way kept me going. Reaching the summit, with its breathtaking panoramic views, brought an overwhelming sense of satisfaction, making every step worth it.

Breakfast Like a Local: Discovering Little Hainan in Kuching
#eatlikealocal #100waysoftravel #sarawak #kuching #Kuchingbreakfast #breakfast
If you're visiting Kuching, I highly recommend stopping by Little Hainan for breakfast. The shop’s décor reflects a charming blend of Nanyang style with a touch of Sarawak culture. One must-try is their butter coffee, a unique drink that originated from opium smokers who used butter and thick coffee to soothe their dry throats—also known as Opium Coffee or the original Keto Coffee. The butter adds a savory richness to the bittersweet Nanyang coffee, creating a smooth and satisfying taste. Their Hainan noodles are authentically prepared, as the owners carry on the Hainanese tradition. My personal favorite is the Hainan toast, paired perfectly with their homemade gula Malacca kaya. For a local twist, you can also enjoy Sarawak signature dishes like laksa Sarawak and kolomee, all served in this cozy, heritage-inspired setting.
Kuching Wetlands National Park
#travellerswonderland
Did a river cruise along Kampung Sibu Laut and almost near to Damai Beach. Really worth it, since the entrance was only RM10/pax.
The life jackets provided were clean, and our guide was so helpful in sharing information of the checkpoints that we visited.
The ride was about almost 1 hour(+-). After that, we had lunch at Telaga Air, which was just located in front of the jetty.
Kuching: The Charming City of Cats and Culture
#traveldiaries
Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, is one of Malaysia's most fascinating and culturally rich cities. Known as the "City of Cats" (*kucing* means cat in Malay), Kuching offers a unique blend of historical landmarks, natural beauty, and diverse cultural heritage.
One of the first things visitors notice is Kuching’s relaxed vibe, with the majestic Sarawak River cutting through the city, offering picturesque views from the waterfront. A leisurely stroll along the Kuching Waterfront is a must, where you’ll find old colonial buildings, the strikingly modern Darul Hana Bridge, and lively street markets. It’s a place where tradition meets modernity effortlessly.
History buffs will appreciate the Brooke family legacy, with landmarks like the Astana (the former residence of the White Rajahs), Fort Margherita, and the Sarawak Museum offering a glimpse into Sarawak’s past. The nearby Kuching Old Courthouse is another historical treasure, now serving as a hub for cultural events and exhibitions.
Kuching is also a gateway to some of Borneo’s most stunning natural wonders. A short drive from the city, you’ll find the famous Bako National Park, known for its wildlife, including the rare proboscis monkey, as well as lush rainforests and pristine beaches. Further afield, Semenggoh Nature Reserve offers a chance to see orangutans in their natural habitat.
Food lovers are in for a treat, too. The city is known for its culinary delights, including the famous Sarawak laksa and kolo mee. A visit to the vibrant local food markets will reveal an exciting variety of local produce and snacks.
Whether you’re exploring its history, enjoying the great outdoors, or savoring its food, Kuching promises an unforgettable experience.

🇲🇾 Awesome swim at Pullman Kuching pool
#infinitypool #100WaysOfTravel
The swimming pool is always a highlight at the hotel and I will visit the swimming pool. This is the swimming pool at Pullman Hotel Kuching. They are going to renovate this swimming pool and will reopen in a few months time. During my stay, it was still open and this swimming pool is lovely especially during sunset time. They also have a large jacuzzi accessible by stairs but is not heated. The views are lovely and you can see beyond the waterfront area in Kuching. Avoid coming here in the day because it is really hot and sunny. There is a small part of the oool which is sheltered so you can hang out there.

Capturing Sarawak: The Perfect Free Photo Spots in Kuching
#photolocation #100waysoftravel #kuching#sarawak #Pangkalansapi #Darulhanabridge #kuchingwaterfront
As a local from Kuching, I highly recommend this perfect free photo location featuring Sarawak’s iconic landmarks, including the DUN building and Darul Hana Bridge. Simply walk across the Darul Hana Bridge to Pangkalan Sapi, a great spot where there aren’t many people, allowing you to take beautiful photos without the crowds. From there, you can stroll to the nearby Orchid Garden, passing by the main entrance of the DUN, another excellent location for photography. The car park at the Orchid Garden also provides a stunning backdrop of the DUN, ideal for portrait shots. This entire route is free, and we usually go before 9 AM to avoid the scorching sun.
Exploring the Hidden Wonders of Gunung Kelambu Lang: A Guided Jungle Adventure
#localtourguides #100waysoftravel #borneo #sarawak #kuching #bako #jungle
Gunung Kelambu Lang is a true wilderness experience, with no well-maintained trails, requiring hikers to climb and cross rivers. It's essential to wear water-resistant, non-slip shoes as your feet will be wet throughout the trek.
We hired a local tour guide from Kampung Sungai Bako to embark on an exciting 6-kilometer journey. The trek took about 2 to 3 hours, depending on our pace. Along the way, our guide explained why the river appeared reddish—the Pelawan trees, with their red bark, occasionally shed into the river, coloring the water. Despite its muddy look, the water was surprisingly clean, and we rewarded ourselves with a refreshing dip in the waterfall's cascade.
Our guide, a local Malay who spoke fluent Chinese and Hakka, made the journey even more engaging by sharing fascinating stories of the area's natural wonders. It was an adventure filled with nature, culture, and a peaceful retreat at the waterfall.
Capturing the Borneo Cultures Museum: Stunning Day and Night Views
#photolocation #100waysoftravel #kuching #sarawak #landmark #borneoculturesmuseum #Architecture
The best spot to capture the stunning Borneo Cultures Museum is from the Golden Bridge on Jalan Haji Openg. This location offers the perfect angle to showcase the museum’s modern and iconic design, with its sleek curves and golden accents standing out against the city skyline. From this vantage point, photographers can easily frame the museum in all its architectural glory. For a wider and more encompassing view, you can cross the bridge and head to the Sarawak Museum grounds. From there, you’ll get a broader perspective, with the museum's impressive structure framed against the backdrop of Kuching's bustling cityscape. The museum’s contemporary design, with its gold accents and glass facade, creates a stunning contrast with the surrounding greenery and urban landscape, making it a prime location for anyone looking to capture the essence of Kuching's "city of museums."
The night view of the Borneo Cultures Museum is equally captivating. From either the Golden Bridge or the Sarawak Museum grounds, the building comes to life with a soft, glowing light that highlights its unique architectural features. The illuminated gold and glass exterior reflects beautifully onto the surrounding area, creating a serene and picturesque scene. The combination of the museum’s modern design and the subtle nighttime lighting adds a sense of elegance to the city. Whether you're capturing the museum in daylight or at night, both offer stunning perspectives of this cultural landmark. The night shots, in particular, highlight the peaceful ambiance of the museum as it blends with the glowing lights of the city, offering photographers a perfect opportunity to snap memorable, breathtaking photos of one of Kuching's most iconic buildings.
Rainy Day Adventure: Conquering the Slippery Trails of Bengoh Dam to Discover a Hidden Waterfall
#outdooradventures #100waysoftravel #Borneo #Sarawak #kuching #bengohdam #nature #waterfall
Our hike at Bengoh Dam on a rainy Saturday was both challenging and rewarding. The day began with a long queue for the boat ride, as it was the weekend and the trail was busy with fellow adventurers.
Once we began the hike, the trail was incredibly slippery due to the constant rain, making it quite a test of balance and endurance. Luckily, wearing Adidas Kampung shoes with good grip was a lifesaver, as the terrain was tricky and muddy throughout. Despite being soaked from head to toe, we pressed on, and reaching the beautiful waterfall made it all worthwhile. The sight of the cascading water and the refreshing mist made us forget about the wet, slippery hike, and we truly enjoyed the natural beauty around us.
A Serene Morning Hike Through the Pristine Forest of Mount Singai

My early morning hike to Gunung Singai was a refreshing escape into nature, surrounded by the beauty of an untouched, pristine forest.
The trail led me through a lush landscape filled with vibrant, diverse plants, creating a serene atmosphere that was both calming and invigorating. As the morning mist lingered among the trees, the forest seemed almost magical, with rays of sunlight filtering through the thick canopy, casting a soft glow on the foliage.
The sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling underfoot added to the peaceful ambiance, making the journey through this beautiful forest a truly memorable experience.
The rich biodiversity and the tranquility of Gunung Singai made the early morning hike an unforgettable adventure, connecting me with the wonders of nature.

Our staycation at the Grand Margherita Hotel was truly delightful, and as locals, it's one of our favorite spots to unwind. The renovated rooms are spacious and comfortable, with a stunning view of the Sarawak River and Dewan Undangan Negeri from the window. The gym is well-equipped, and the swimming pool offers a beautiful riverside view. What stood out the most was the breakfast buffet, especially the kolomee and Sarawak laksa stations where each bowl is freshly prepared. I loved how they accommodated my special request for "laksa kolomee," making the stay even more memorable.
🇲🇾 Breakfast Buffet at Pullman Kuching
#hotelbuffet #100WaysOfTravel
Having buffet is the best! You can choose what you like and how much to eat. Here I am at the breakfast buffet at Pullman Kuching in their Executive Lounge. There is no live station here but they have ala-cart menu for guests to order if you like to have other dishes. At their buffet area, most of the breakfast items are there and the selection is still quite alright. They also have a special Sarawak laksa which I find it to be oily and different from the Sarawak version. It is a quiet lounge and a great lounge for views towards Kuching waterfront.
