2025 Kalambaka Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in February)

The Meteora is a rock formation in Central Grecce hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Meteora is located near the town of Kalabaka, which is around 355 kilometers 5 hours away from Athens. Meteora is the largest archaeological site of Greece, it has been a UNESCO World Heiritage Site since 1989. A vast complex of giant rock pillars with monasteries made on the picks of the sandstone cliffs centuries ago creates a truly surreal landscape found nowhere else in the world. Today only six monasteries are active, during our tour, we visited 3 out of 6, that is Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapafsas, Holy Monastery of St. Stephen ( the most easy access with a stone bridge ) and Holy Monastery of Holy Trinity. In order to visit all the six monasteries, you need to stay at least for 1 night, you also need to take note of their different opening hours. 3 euros need for the entrance fee to the monastery .

we drove up to the north of Athens about 400 km to see the incredible formation, the sharp edges of the mountains, and the monasteries located by the cliffs…simply breathtaking!!!

You will be in comfort and will manage to visit all five Monasteries in one day. However, does it sound like you are missing out on something? Perhaps the hiking experience itself? Take the train from Athens to the small but charming village to Kalambaka. If you drive it is even better? This is one of the bases you can start hiking to those magnificent rock formations. The village itself is very tine, but adorable. It has everything you need! Restaurants to choose from, few grocery stores and a pharmacy. Quick question, would you reconsider moving here? Visiting each monastery was such a unique experience, and for just €3 per monastery, it was totally worth it. I loved exploring the Great Meteoron Monastery – the largest one – with its beautiful frescoes and historic artifacts. The views from up there were unreal! 😍 Afterward, I visited the Holy Trinity Monastery, which is a bit harder to reach but offers some of the best views in Meteora. The climb was quite a workout, but the peace and tranquility made it all worthwhile. 🌿 If you're not much of a hiker, you can still enjoy the scenery by taking a scenic drive around the area. I also took a short detour to the town of Kalambaka for lunch – it's a charming place with some great local food. 🥗 Don't forget to visit Theopetra Cave nearby to see one of the oldest archaeological sites in Greece. Overall, a day at Meteora is an experience you can't miss if you're visiting Greece. I suggest ditching tour groups that drive up the monastery. Instead hike up!!!! The feeling is very satisfying and fullfilling. You can stay at the hotels at the base of the Meteora. Wake up early and slowly climb. If you want to catch the sunrise wake up earlier duhhhh. Anyway as you climb up the rocky pathway it kinda dawn on you how the priest and priestess and everyone at the monastery hike up and down everytime they need something from town. I love the Kalambaka area here. Everyone is so warm and friendly. Every morning everyone sending good vibes greeting each other "Kalimera" which is good morning. I will always Kalimera to you too lol. The hotel that I stayed in literally under the rocks...love the view...love how cooling it is....If you are a nature person, you can feel all the earthly energy giving you it's abundance....You will feel very recharged.
