🏜Just 3 hours from Almaty, Charyn Canyon is one of Kazakhstan’s most stunning natural wonders — often called the “Kazakh Grand Canyon.” 🚶Walk through the famous Valley of Castles, where towering orange cliffs look like they were carved by giants. The 3 km trail takes you down to the Charyn River — perfect for photos, picnics, or just soaking up the silence. There's also a "shuttle" that can get you around the Canyon, so prepare some cash 💸 🚗 Getting there: The best would be booking a tour from Almaty or renting a car. But eventually, the gropu tour would be cheaper. 🍴 Where to Eat: There’s a small on-site restaurant near the parking area — great for a hot meal or tea after your hike. 🛏 Stay Overnight: Book a cozy yurt or cabin at the Eco Park right in the canyon. ✨️If you’re ever in Almaty and craving a touch of the unreal, Kaindy Lake is the place. (4.5 hours away from the city) Tucked high in the Tian Shan mountains of eastern Kazakhstan, this turquoise pocket of water feels more like a scene from a fantasy movie. 🥾Getting there: ➡️Kaindy is about 120–140 km east of Almaty (roughly a 4 hour drive depending on traffic and road conditions). Many travelers combine Kaindy with the nearby Kolsai Lakes — it’s on the same route toward the Kegen/Saty area. ➡️The last stretch is rough. You can't go there on a regular car. You should rent special "buhanka" or a high-clearance car, and the driver will get you there (45 mins from Saty). They will also wait for you there to bring you back to the town. ➡️You can bargain and ask for 25000 tenge per car. But you should have a skill. Normally, they would ask for 30000-35000 tenge per car. ➡️The car won't take you directly to the lake. You'll either have to walk 40 mins up the hill, or you can ride a horse, which is extra price. We went there on foot, but get ready for the dirt and horse's excrements all the way. You can ride a horse on the way back too, if you prefer. ✨️Best spots: ➡️When you get to the place with 2 roads, one going down, the other one going up, take the one up. After approx 200 meters, you'll get the best view of the lake. Mountains, the whole lake, clouds, and no people. The tours would never get you there, as they all go down. But the view from the top is gorgeous 😍. Check out the 2 and 4th pics. ➡️Afterward, go down straight to the lake and see those trees closer. 2 hours would be enough for the whole place. The combination of mountain scenery, glassy turquoise water, and those eerie submerged trunks creates an atmosphere that’s peaceful, slightly surreal, and utterly photogenic. 💡Tips: Take a raincoat and dress in layers as you never know the weather in the mountains. If you only have time for one stop, this is the place to soak in alpine calm without a strenuous hike. 👀What to do: ➡️Walk the shore: A gentle path circles parts of the lake; take your time and find little coves and viewpoints+ insta-style cafè on top for nice pics. ➡️Pedal boat or just boat: Small boats or pedal boats are available at the Lower Lake — a peaceful way to experience the reflections up close. You can rent for 40 or 60 mins. ➡️Picnic and relax: There are simple benches and grassy spots for a picnic. Bring snacks and a blanket and enjoy the calm. Some cafés are an option, too. ➡️Combine with the Middle Lake: For a longer day, hike or ride a horse toward Middle Kolsai — the terrain gets steeper, and the views are marvelous. 🚗Access: ➡️The Lower Lake is the most accessible of the three and is commonly visited as a day trip from Almaty via the Saty route. Road conditions vary — a higher-clearance vehicle helps, but many visitors use local taxis or organized tours. Personally, I booked a transfer from Almaty, as I stayed for a couple of days at the hotel on the lake. You CAN get there by a rental car, but you should rent it in Almaty. ➡️There's a road down from the parking: you can walk (5 mins) or take a local shuttle (extra fee). Kok-Tobe Mountain is an entertainment venue with panoramic views of the city and mountains 😍 The Kok-Tobe TV Tower is the main symbol of Almaty, visible from virtually anywhere in the city. You can ascend to Kok-Tobe Park directly from the city center by cable car. At the summit, there are numerous observation decks, allowing you to enjoy the local mountain scenery from 360°. Since 2020, car access to the main road to Big Almaty Lake has been blocked (the mountain road is considered unsafe) by a barrier, approximately 10 km from the lake. You can reach the barrier by rented car or taxi from Almaty. The remaining 10 km can be covered in three ways👇🏻 1. Sports mopeds (price: ~$50) and bicycles (price: ~$25) are available for rent at the barrier. ❗️Please bring cash for payment. 2. You can easily walk. However, be prepared that the roundtrip from the barrier to BAL and back will take about 6 hours. And it's not an easy walk; you'll have to hike uphill to get to the lake. Be mentally and physically prepared, and bring snacks. 3. Another option is to buy a tour to Big Almaty Lake from Almaty. However, we didn't find a single tour that took tourists to the lake by transport. Guided walking tours with picnics along the way are available. ❗️Don't forget to bring your passport! Koktobe Park is bustling with activity, featuring an amusement park and souvenir shops. →Note: The cable car is quite high, so we recommend purchasing a one-way cable car ticket and then walking down the mountain on the promenade. It's also possible to reach the bus stop at the base in about 20-30 minutes. The transportation system and cityscape are well-developed, and contrary to my expectations before visiting, I got the impression that it's a very easy city to visit.

First of all, the rooms are comfortable, and the beds are so cozy that you can enjoy a good night's sleep and complete relaxation. The bathroom in the room has a bathtub, making it perfect for a hot bath. Additionally, the view from the terrace offers a stunning panorama of Almaty city. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which I truly appreciated. One of the main reasons I highly recommend Rahat Palace Hotel in Almaty is its breakfast! They serve Korean-style breakfast, including steamed white rice, soybean paste soup, kimchi, pickled radish, and fried eggs. It was a perfect Korean breakfast experience. On the basement level, there is a spacious swimming pool, making it an ideal spot for a hotel staycation. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to use the pool, but it looked very large and even has a sauna. If I visit Almaty again, I plan to enjoy the hotel facilities and have a relaxing staycation. 🇰🇿 Almaty, Kazakhstan 💙 NAVAT I am currently traveling in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and I’d like to introduce NAVAT, a restaurant where you can enjoy traditional Kazakh cuisine. NAVAT is a well-known food spot in Almaty with several chain locations throughout the city. I visited the NAVAT branch located just a 10-minute drive from my hotel. Almaty is often called the "City of Apples" due to its production of diverse and delicious apples, so trying apple juice here is a must. At NAVAT, I ordered freshly squeezed apple juice, which was refreshingly tangy and absolutely delightful. For the main course, I ordered Beshbarmak, a traditional Kazakh dish featuring horse meat and horse meat sausage served with thin flour noodles. The horse meat was tender and savory, while the horse meat sausage had a burst of rich flavor. The accompanying potatoes were soft and had a great texture. The total cost for the apple juice and Beshbarmak was 8,250 Tenge (approximately 21,700 KRW). The colorful interior of the restaurant exudes a Kazakh atmosphere, making it a great place to experience local culture while traveling.
