I enjoyed a short trip by ferry from the main island of Okinawa to the surrounding islands, both large and small. Even for a short time, I felt a sense of the extraordinary as I was blown by the sea breeze. There are many ways to enjoy the trip, such as staying overnight on Izena Island or Kume Island, or taking a day trip hiking on Tsuken Island. Izena Island is the birthplace of King Sho En of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and there are many historical sites related to him. Tamagoten is a sacred place where the remains of the king's ancestors and family are interred. The Mekaru Residence was the home of the king's uncle and was rebuilt in the Meiji period. Walking around the island visiting these historical sites, I felt as if I had traveled back in time to the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom. #OkinawaTrip
