Weston Mangrove Proboscis Monkey & Sunset Firefly Cruise in Sabah
In Sabah, there are three famous mangrove forests, namely Kawa, Weston and Klias. While each mangrove has its own unique features, they are all famous for spotting Malaysia’s national treasure, the proboscis monkeys, and for watching fireflies at night. I joined a tour group to the Weston Mangrove Wetlands, hoping to get a chance to see proboscis monkeys firsthand.
It takes about two hours to drive from Kota Kinabalu to Weston Mangrove Forest. Usually we depart from the hotel at one or two o'clock in the afternoon and return to the hotel at around nine o'clock in the evening. After arriving at the mangroves, you will have an afternoon tea and then take a speedboat to start looking for proboscis monkeys. After returning to the shack for dinner in the dark, we enter the river again. If we are lucky, we may have the opportunity to see beautiful fireflies flying in the wetland woods.
