#getgoing2025 The Haya Festival of the Inle Region: The First Village Established in Inle Lake, with a History of 510 Years Inle Lake's history began with the establishment of four villages within the lake: Haya, Nan Pan, Naung Taw, and Ywar Gyi Bant Pon. The name "Inle Ywar" (Inle Village) eventually became "Inle Lake." Haya Ywar Ma (Haya Village) was the first of these villages to be established. The second village was founded in 872 BE (Burmese Era) during the Tabodwe month (roughly January/February). The first village did not prosper and suffered from widespread illness. Even after the establishment of the second village, illness persisted for 13 years. To remedy this, they consulted and decided to hold a healing ceremony at the village's main pagoda (Ywar U Pagoda), which already existed at the time of the village's founding. Since this took place in Shan State, instead of conducting the healing ceremony in the month the village was founded, they decided to hold it one day before the Shan New Year. This led to the 15th day after the Tazaungmone Full Moon (roughly October/November) being designated as Haya Pwe Day. The Haya Pwe is a very simple celebration. Ten nights after the Tazaungmone Full Moon, an announcement is made to inform everyone about the upcoming healing ceremony. To generate public interest, this announcement is called "Boat Side Battles" (Hlei Nan Sit Taik - လှေနံ စစ်တိုက်) and encourages participation in the festival. This announcement is made by the Seti Ward (formerly Myauk Hpet Hte Hpone - မြောက်ဖက်ထဲဟုံး) by playing large drums (Oh Si Ku - အိုးစီကူး) along the canal where the boats will parade, chanting rhythmic verses. After this "Boat Side Battle," men from the village, along with other residents, begin preparations for the boat parade, while women and elders prepare offerings of rice (San Koon Hpay - ဆန်ကွန်းဖ္လေ) for the monks. During these preparations, the village elder (Ywar Saw - ရွာဆော်) makes an offering to the guardian spirit of the village's fire (Pho Kin Nat - ဖိုးကင်းနတ်), both because the dry season is approaching and because they will be releasing fireworks and hot air balloons during the healing ceremony. This offering is made on the Wednesday before the festival. The people of Haya then begin building their ceremonial boats (phaung - ဖောင်). Some wards build boats decorated with white umbrellas and cloth, some with elaborate layered canopies (Kanakadan Hti Pya Thart Phaung - ကနက္ကဒါန်ထီးပြာဿာဒ်ဖောင်), and some with gold leaf decorations (Shwe Hsaing Phaung - ရွှေဆိုင်းဖောင်).
