Hagi Sightseeing Boat (Hagi Hakkei Yūransen Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Enjoying Hagi's Castle Town from a Boat in Yamaguchi Prefecture
Hagi in Yamaguchi Prefecture is a tourist destination that features the Hagi Castle Town, which was registered as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2015, and the Horiuchi Important Traditional Building Group Conservation Area. While it is certainly enjoyable to stroll around with a map in hand, I took a ride on the "Hagi Hakkei Sightseeing Boat" to enjoy Hagi from the water. The approximately 40-minute boat ride allows you to spend time in the pleasant breeze. The boatman's stories were also fun.
Special courses are also available in spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
There was a free parking lot available during the boat ride.

Sakura of Abandoned Castle

The stronghold of the Hagi rulers for 260 years
The impressive walls of Hagi Castle remind us that in the Edo period (1603-1867) there was a majestic capital of the Choshu Principality, which was ruled by the Mori clan.
Strongly Recommended
Watch the carp and turtles swimming in the moat
Climb to the ruins of Hagi Castle for spectacular views
Visit Shizuki Park, surrounding the ruins of the castle
How to get there
The castle can be quickly reached by taxi from Higashi-Hagi Station.
The Hagi Junkan Maaru bus follows the western route — it will take you to the Hagi-jo-ato/Shizuki Koen Iriguchi stop, from where you can walk to the Castle Town of Hagi in a few minutes.
Not only the castle
Combine a tour of Hagi Castle with a visit to its castle town. The ruins are located very close to Kikugahama Beach, not far from the Sensunraku Jozangama pottery workshop — here you can see one of the largest "dragon" furnaces in Hagi.
The most beautiful sakura in the city
Shizuki Park, one of the attractions of Hagi Castle, is famous for its sakura fantastic stunning views. There are more than 500 trees growing in that area, blooming from the end of March to the beginning of April. At this time, the park is covered by the white and pink foam of petals that is a truly fascinating sight.
Very beautiful sakura flowers in full bloom
A World Heritage Site with a rich history as well
The warlord Mori Terumoto lost the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and was forced to move from Hiroshima to Hagi. Here, in 1604, he built his new castle, around which a lively castle town grew up. The castle town and the ruins of Hagi Castle are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Tokoji Temple

Getting there: Tokoji stands about two kilometers southeast of Higashi-Hagi Station. By bicycle it can be reached in about 10-15 minutes slightly uphill, while on foot it takes about 30 minutes.
Highlights: Tokoji Temple was founded in 1691 and belongs to the Obaku school of Japanese Zen Buddhism. Its beautiful wooden temple buildings stand within the tranquil woods east of downtown Hagi, offering visitors a moment of serenity.
Behind the temple buildings lies the graveyard of half of the Mori daimyo (feudal lords), who governed from Hagi during the Edo Period. The odd numbered daimyo in the succession of Mori lords were buried here, while the first and the even numbered lords were buried at Daishoin Temple. 😬
