#summervacay Exploring the Barrio de las Cuevas in Guadix was honestly such a cool and random adventure. This neighborhood is full of actual cave houses built right into the hills, and yep, people still live in them. Walking around feels like you’ve stepped into another world, whitewashed chimneys popping out of the ground, little doors carved into the hillside, and narrow paths winding through it all. I checked out the cave museum and it gave a fun look at how people used to live here, and honestly, it’s wild how cozy and functional these places are. The vibe is super peaceful, with epic views of the surrounding landscape and Sierra Nevada in the distance. The locals are friendly, and you can even grab a bite or coffee in some of the cave style spots. It’s not touristy in a loud way, which makes it even better. Barrio de las Cuevas is quirky, chill, and way more interesting than I expected. Definitely worth the detour.

Granada is an enchanted city, right? However, just an hour away from Granada, there is another charming town that stores fascinating history and culture of the caves, and that is Guadix. How to get there? Bus: 45-60mins, from Granada estación de AutoBús to Guadix. Operated by BAM, 8 coaches per day, single ticket around €6. What to see? 📍 📸 Barrio de las Cuevas: the cave district, home to over 2,000 cave dwellings that are still inhabited today. 📍📸 Mirador del Cerro de la Bala: where you can see the breathtaking panoramic views of Guadix, which includes the picturesque hills, valleys, and distinctive geological formations typical of the region. 📍 Catedral de la Encarnación de Guadix: an architectural masterpiece that blends Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Built on the site of a former mosque, this grand cathedral is a testament to the town’s rich and diverse history. Climb the bell tower for panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Sierra Nevada mountains in the distance. 📍 Alcazaba Citadell: a Moorish fortress offering stunning views over the town and the surrounding valleys. It is temporarily closed but it is still very nice to walk around that neighborhood. The original building was a Visigothic temple on top of which the Hama Mosque was built. Its construction can be divided into three phases: Gothic, when the current cathedral was built by Pedro Morales and Enrique Egás until 1547; Renaissance, when Diego de Siloé worked on the expansion of the building; Baroque, which began in the early 18th century with designs by Vicente Acero, Thomas, Gaspar Cayón de la Vega, Pachote, Ruíz del Peral, Master Moreno and others, in which the facades, roof, high altar, choir and pulpit were built. From the street level, the Cathedral stands out, a real gem where Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles coexist. Built between the 16th and 18th centuries on the ruins of an ancient mosque, it features outstanding rooms such as the sacristy, the work of the master Diego de Siloé, and the magnificent Baroque choir designed by Ruís del Peral. Guadix preserves many examples of Mudéjar architecture. One of the most outstanding churches is the Santiago Cathedral, built in the 16th century. A slender Mudejar tower stands beside its beautiful plate-style façade, while inside the church the precious Mudejar coffered ceiling is a standout feature.
