Gongyi Grotto Temple | The awe and beauty of thousand-year-old stone carvings.
| The awe and beauty of thousand-year-old stone carvings.
📍Address: Siwan Village, Heluo Town, Gongyi City, Henan Province
Gongyi Grotto Temple is a low-key ancient temple that carries a heavy history and artistic treasures. Stepping into the temple, time seems to flow backward. The exquisite stone-carved Buddha statues, either solemn or smiling, each tell the glory of the Northern Wei Dynasty. The reliefs in the grottoes are delicate and detailed. Whether it is the flying apsaras or the lively musicians, they seem to break through the walls and play ancient music in your ears.
Walking around, the mottled light and shadow fall on the ancient stone walls, quiet and sacred. There are not many tourists here, allowing you to calm down and savor the charm of each carving, feeling the craftsmanship of ancient artisans. In the noisy world, Gongyi Grotto Temple is like a pure land, waiting for you to explore its mystery and beauty, and encounter a spiritual dialogue across a thousand years.💕
Gongyi Shiju Tribe Homestay is so unique that I don't want to leave.
It's a 2.5-hour drive from Pingdingshan, making it a great choice for a weekend getaway. When I was in Zhengzhou, there were no such homestays, and I don't know when they became popular. This Shiju Tribe is a typical rural cave style. The owner provides barbecue grills, skewers, charcoal, and other necessities, so you can have a self-service barbecue at night. It's also very cost-effective, quiet, and comfortable, making it a great choice for families traveling together. The rooms come in different types, such as double beds, standard rooms, and lofts. The hygiene is up to standard, and the details are thoughtful (tea sets and magazines are provided). There is a shared courtyard for every 3 to 4 rooms, and the layout is very reasonable. If you want to spend a weekend in the mountains, this is a great choice that won't disappoint.
Dining: Breakfast, stir-fried dishes, barbecue, etc. The taste is good, above the average farmhouse level, and the tableware is exquisite.
Service: My friends and I were all very satisfied with the service. The staff at the front desk and the restaurant were very enthusiastic and obviously well-trained. It made us feel very comfortable.
If you want to relax on the weekend, you can stay for a day. It's very quiet.

Qinglong Mountain - Ciyun Temple is a must-visit autumn destination around Zhengzhou.
Every year, when the mountains are covered with red leaves, we visit Qinglong Mountain. Although the mountain is not high, the winding road allows you to enjoy the autumn scenery. The mountain is not far away, just over an hour's drive, and self-driving is the best choice.
1. Parking at the entrance of the scenic area is free, and you can drive in. The slope is a bit steep. A few years ago, the ticket was 30, now it is 50, and there are also sightseeing buses. There are very few people on non-holidays, so you can have a deep experience. You can drive all the way to the parking lot at the entrance of Ciyun Temple. Ciyun Temple - Xiaotianmen - Zulin - Qinglongtan, according to this route, the whole tour takes about 2 hours.
2. Ciyun Temple was open the first year we went, but it was closed the next few times. This may require luck. The Zulin next to it has a long history, but most of the buildings are newly built, but the architectural style is unique. In spring, there are lush locust flowers nearby that can be picked. In summer, you can park your car near Qinglongtan and play in the water. The food at the nearby farmhouses is also good.
3. It is worth mentioning that the stone tablets of Ciyun Temple have very high artistic value and are very precious historical materials. There is a Ming stele with the inscription "Qinglong Mountain Ciyun Temple Fifty-three Peaks Presenting the Realm Map", surrounded by peaks and valleys, with Moteng and Zhu Falan standing on the top of Qinglong Peak, like a fairyland.
Gongyi Butterfly Valley - Small Loop Hike.
Butterfly Valley is home to historical and cultural relics such as ancient buildings, stone tablets, and cliff carvings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. During the hike, you can occasionally see the ruins of the Dragon King Temple from the Daoguang period and the pure bluestone Catholic Church from the Republic of China period.
These ancient sites bear the marks of time, adding a rich historical and cultural atmosphere to the hiking journey, allowing people to appreciate the natural beauty while also feeling the accumulation of history.
As for why it is called Butterfly Valley, there is no exact answer, but there are two local legends:
1. There was originally a large stone on this mountain with four butterfly patterns on it, and the mountain was named after that stone. Unfortunately, the stone was stolen.
2. Butterflies often gather and dance on this mountain in summer, so it was named Butterfly Valley.
3. The Xiaolong Pool on the route is located in the hinterland of Fuxi Mountain, also known as "Pearl Pool" and "Lan Spring." There is an interesting legend about the origin of the name "Xiaolong Pool":
Legend has it that when the Jade Immortal Mother came to Gongyi to cultivate, there were two small dragons, one black and one white, in front of her. They both took a fancy to the pool water and fought over it. At first, the little black dragon occupied the place, but it did many evil deeds, and the people hated it. Later, the little white dragon took back the pool water with the help of the people, and the locals called it "Xiaolong Pool."
On the winding mountain road in Gongyi, there is a "Fujiwara Tofu Shop" (actually a milk tea shop~). I guess it's because the winding mountain road here is comparable to Akina Mountain in "Initial D," so the owner built an almost identical shop here.
Gongyi Grotto Temple.
Gongyi Grotto Temple is located in Siwan Village, Heluo Town, Gongyi City. It was built in the second year of the Xiping period of the Northern Wei Dynasty (517). It was originally named Xixuan Temple, and was renamed "Shifang Pure Land Temple" in the Song Dynasty, and renamed Grotto Temple in the Qing Dynasty. It is a national key cultural relic protection unit.
There are 5 caves, 1 Thousand Buddha Niche, 3 cliff statues, 7,743 Buddha statues, and 186 statue inscriptions and other stone inscriptions in Gongyi Grotto Temple.
Gongyi Grotto Temple was built after the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang. It combines the foreign influence of Buddhist art with the art of the Han nationality in the Central Plains, breaking away from the characteristics of deep eyes, high nose, and thin bones in the early Northern Wei Dynasty, and replacing them with square faces, serene expressions, and mostly static statue styles.
It forms an artistic style that transitions from the Northern Dynasties to the Tang Dynasty, and occupies an important position in the history of carving art. The "Emperor and Empress Worshiping Buddha" in the first cave is the most complete single piece preserved in China.
I have been to many national key cultural relic protection units and seen many grotto temples, but this is the first one where I can appreciate the statues at such a close distance without any protective measures, let alone a national second-class one.
However, everything has two sides. If you can get close, there will be tourists touching it. The "Emperor and Empress Worshiping Buddha" has been touched so much that it is shiny, and there is no limit on the number of visitors during holidays. There is no one-way line in the cave, and the narrow space is crowded, which greatly affects the experience.
The ticket is CNY 30, parking is convenient, and the parking fee is CNY 10.

Pathfinder Episode 112: The Unexpected Gongyi Grottoes.
The Gongyi Grottoes in Zhengzhou were built during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty. They were used by the Northern Wei emperor and empress to hold Buddhist ceremonies and are considered royal grottoes. After more than 1,500 years, only five caves, one Thousand Buddha Niche, and three cliffside Buddha statues remain.
🌺
When you visit, you can't help but lament the serious damage that has occurred over the years, but when you look closely at the photos, the exquisite craftsmanship is still breathtaking.
The statues in the grottoes are not known for their complexity or splendor, but for their overall elegance and beauty. When you look closely, you can feel a sense of life in them.

Northern Song Imperial Mausoleum, Gongyi City.
Gongyi Song Mausoleum is a gem of ancient Chinese mausoleum architecture, bearing the historical vicissitudes of the seven emperors and eight mausoleums of the Northern Song Dynasty. Not only does it have the largest number of mausoleum stone carvings since the Han and Tang Dynasties, but it also witnessed the glory and end of the Northern Song Dynasty royal family.
Due to the war, the Southern and Northern Song Mausoleums are scattered in two places, and the Gongyi Song Mausoleum is an important part of them. Here lie the seven emperors and eight queens of the Northern Song Dynasty. Their mausoleums are solemn and solemn, demonstrating the nobility and majesty of the royal family.
The architectural style of the Song Mausoleum is unique. Each mausoleum is composed of the upper palace, the lower palace, the queen's mausoleum, and the accompanying tomb. The upper palace of the mausoleum is dominated by the mausoleum platform, surrounded by the divine wall, with a que tower on the side of the door, and stone lions outside the door, showing the style and majesty of the royal family.
On both sides of the divine road outside the divine gate, there are stone statues symbolizing the guards, including the pillars, elephants and tamed elephants, auspicious birds, horn ends, horses, horse control officials, stone tigers, stone sheep, etc., each of which is exquisitely carved and lifelike. These stone carvings not only show the artistic taste of the Northern Song Dynasty royal family, but also witnesses of history.
Gongyi Song Mausoleum is not only a solemn and solemn mausoleum, but also a living history. Walking into it, it seems to hear the echo of history and feel the glory and sorrow of the past.

Northern Song Imperial Mausoleums.
🐉The Northern Song Dynasty had seven emperors and eight mausoleums. In addition to the two emperors who were captured by the Jin Dynasty, the mausoleums also include the father of Zhao Kuangyin and many other princes and nobles, forming a large area of Northern Song Imperial Mausoleums in Gongyi. The Northern Song Dynasty established its capital in Kaifeng, but the mausoleums were in Gongyi. It is said that Zhao Kuangyin wanted to move the capital to Luoyang but was stopped by Zhao Kuangyi and his ministers. When he passed by Gongyi, he decided to be buried with his father.
🐉The Northern Song Imperial Mausoleums can be described as an open-air museum of stone carvings. The stone statues on both sides of the sacred path are exquisitely carved. There are elephants that are considered to ward off evil spirits, sheep that are considered auspicious, guards with knives, ministers with memorials, and of course, indispensable lions. The entire ground building is very grand, no less than the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum in Nanjing. The stone carvings are also tall and mighty, making them more magnificent than the stone statues of the Qianling Mausoleum where Emperor Gaozong of Tang and Wu Zetian are buried.

Kang Baiwan Manor.
🐉Kang Baiwan Manor, a huge manor built by the Kang family in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, was home to the Kang family for 13 generations. The family started as local officials in the late Ming Dynasty, but as the government became corrupt, they started a shipping business, accumulated wealth, and became landlords. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, they hosted Empress Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guangxu, who were fleeing to Xi'an and then returning to Beijing, which made them famous.
🐉The Kang family was charitable and often helped the local poor. They donated money to build water conservancy projects to resist floods. After the fall of the Qing Dynasty, they joined the May Fourth Movement. During the Anti-Japanese War, they sold their property to raise funds for the war. The family has always valued education and has been prosperous for a long time. The existing manor buildings are well preserved, and walking in them is like being in Qing society. There is a castle in the garden, which is a typical house fortress wall. The rockery, ancient trees, and carvings are everywhere, and you can feel the luxurious heritage. They also formed a group to defend their homes during the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom period.
🇨🇳Experience 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and inherit Chinese civilization
Gongyi Grottoes.
🐉The Longmen Grottoes Binyang Cave Emperor and Empress Buddha Statue was stolen during the Republic of China's chaotic times and is now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. The only remaining Emperor and Empress Buddha Statue in China is in the Gongyi Grottoes. I came here today specifically to see it and was truly shocked. The figures are lifelike, and they even carry fashionable bags.
🐉The Gongyi Grottoes were carved during the Northern Wei Dynasty. The Emperor and Empress Buddha Statue tells the story of the Northern Wei monarch and queen worshipping Buddha. The scene is grand and lively, with people in the queue serving the emperor and queen, holding tributes, and going on a pilgrimage. The figures' expressions are mostly smiling, and they are wearing wide clothes and belts, which are typical of the Northern Wei Dynasty.
🐉The grottoes mostly use a central pillar structure, and the upper part of the central pillar is often carved with flying figures. The flying figures, wearing fluttering ribbons and freely soaring in the sky, originated in ancient India and were influenced by ancient Greek angel culture, showing a relaxed posture. The decoration on the top of the cave is exquisite, with patterns such as lotus flowers, and the colors are still visible today.

2024 Self-driving Su Lu Yu (14): A glance at a thousand years - Gongyi Grotto Temple.
Gongyi Grotto Temple (Gong County Grotto) is located 5 kilometers north of Gongyi City, Henan Province, under the Dalishan Mountain in Heluo Town, with beautiful scenery.
The Gongyi Grotto Temple was founded during the Northern Wei Emperor Xiaowen, and is one of the large-scale grottoes excavated by the Northern Wei royal family. The Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties successively carved niches and statues here. It was originally named Xixuan Temple, and was renamed Jingtusi in the Tang Dynasty. It was called Dalishan Shifang Jingtusi in the Song Dynasty, and it has been called Grotto Temple since the Qing Dynasty.
The Grotto Temple is a place where the Northern Wei Emperor and the Queen held Buddhist activities. Later, Tang Taizong Li Shimin and the Northern Song Dynasty royal family held Buddhist activities here, leaving a large number of precious statues and inscriptions.
After more than 1,500 years of wind and rain, there are 5 existing caves, 1,000 Buddha niches, 3 cliff Buddhas, 7,743 Buddhas, 186 statues inscriptions and other inscriptions.
Gongyi Grotto Temple also has three national treasure-level cultural relics, namely: "Emperor and Queen Buddha, the most beautiful Feitian, Lotus Caojing."
The Emperor and Queen Buddha (Figure 4) reflects the prevalence of Buddhism in the Northern Wei Dynasty. The emperor and queen personally came to the temple to worship the Buddha, and used the high relief carving technique.
The earliest appearance of "Emperor and Queen Buddha" is in the Binyang Middle Cave of Longmen Grottoes. However, unfortunately, after being stolen in 1935, the Gong County Grotto Buddha became the only solitary product in the country! At the beginning, there were 18 Buddha pictures, but now only 15 are well preserved, each of which is a fine art!
The most beautiful Feitian (Figure 8). Feitian originated from the ancient Indian Buddhist classics. They are free and happy gods, they are the attendants of the Buddha, and they serve the Buddha through dancing, playing music, and burning incense. This pair of Feitian, slender body, thin gauze through the body, the ribbon floats from the back of the neck to the shoulders, and then flips to the armpit and floats back! They hold a lotus in one hand and a lotus bud in the other.
The fifth cave has a characteristic lotus cao well (Figure 6) on the top of the grotto. In the middle is a blooming big lotus, surrounded by six flying days around the lotus. There are also birth patterns in the four corners, which are exquisitely shaped. It is said. The sunflower top of the Beijing People's Congress Hall was designed and built according to it.
As a treasure of Chinese grotto art, Gongyi Grotto Temple has preserved many precious cultural heritages after thousands of years of wind and rain. It is not only a representative of Buddhist art in the Northern Wei Dynasty, but also the graceful dance of Feitian Tian, the solemn scene of the emperor and queen Buddha, leading the general public through history and feeling the spirit and belief of ancient China.

Take your kids to Daxigou and enjoy the most beautiful autumn in Zhengzhou.
Daxigou is a great place for autumn outings and family hikes. It has diverse landforms: valleys, lakes, mountains, and pools. Every October and November, it is the best place to see red leaves and enjoy autumn in Zhengzhou.
What age is Daxigou suitable for? How many hours does it take? Where can I park to get to the mountain faster? Is the road easy to drive? Is there a route that doesn't require backtracking? Is it suitable for the elderly? Are there any restaurants nearby?
Address: Search for "Daxigou" on your GPS. We arrived at noon in late October last year. There were many cars and we couldn't get to the end, so we parked on the south side of the village and walked downhill into the valley.
If there is no traffic jam, you can drive directly to the end of the navigation. You need to pay a CNY 10 sanitation management fee, and parking is free.
Journey: It takes 1.1-1.5 hours from Zhengzhou, and 2 hours from Luoyang, Xuchang, Jiyuan, etc. The mountain road is easy to drive, and ordinary cars can go up.
Hiking route: Daxigou Heart-shaped Lake - Hanging Plank Road - Mountain God Temple - Qinglongtan (optional) - Ciyun Temple (optional). The whole journey takes 4.5-5 hours with kids. If you only go to the Heart-shaped Lake - Hanging Plank Road - Mountain God Temple, it takes about 3-3.5 hours with kids.
Scenery along the way: valleys, mountains, artificially excavated hanging mountain roads, green trees everywhere, red leaves and yellow leaves in late autumn, very beautiful!
There are stairs going down halfway, leading to the reservoir. We didn't go down because we were afraid of going too far with the kids, so we just went straight ahead.
Internet celebrity check-in point: Crooked Tree
Best place to see red leaves: Mountain God Temple!
If your child is over 6 years old and has good physical strength, you can continue to hike to Qinglongtan and then to Ciyun Temple. This section of the road is about 1 kilometer, or you can take a local private car (CNY 10/person) back to Daxigou to pick up the car.
Climbing difficulty:
There are not many steps uphill along the way. People under 65 years old without heart disease, hypertension and other symptoms will not feel too tired if they don't go to Qinglongtan.

Going to!! Gongyi_Kangbaiwan Manor!!!
The Luo River meanders past the west of Gongyi City, and on its banks lies Kangdian Village, where the typical feudal fortress-style building complex Kangbaiwan Manor is located. Because it backs onto Mang Mountain and faces the Luo River, it is known as the 'Golden Turtle Probing the Water.'
Speaking of Kangbaiwan, many friends might be curious, who is Kangbaiwan? The so-called 'Kangbaiwan' refers to the manor owner Kang Yingkui, who twice hung the golden signboard 'Thousands of Acres of Good Land,' with land and shops spread across eight counties in Shandong, Shaanxi, and Henan provinces, earning him the title of 'Millionaire.' Later, when Empress Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guangxu returned to Beijing, they passed by Kangdian. The Kang family funded and supervised the construction of Heishiguan, the county town, the official palace, and the 'Dragon Kiln,' spending over 1 million taels of silver and donating another 1 million taels to the Qing court, earning fame from Empress Dowager Cixi. Therefore, 'Kangbaiwan' here does not specifically refer to one person but is a collective term for Kang Dayong, Kang Yingkui, Kang Jiande, and other members of the Kang family since the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Speaking of this, some friends might be curious about the concept of the Kang family's assets. During the Republic of China period, there was a saying, 'East Liu (Liu Xiaowu), West Zhang (Zhang Fang), and in between, Old Kang (Kang family),' referring to the three great wealthy families of the Central Plains. To be more specific, there was another saying, 'Head resting on Jingyang, Xi'an, feet stepping on Linyi, Jinan; horses running a thousand miles without eating other people's grass, people traveling a thousand miles all on Kang family land.' Moreover, during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Kangbaiwan, along with Shen Wansan and Ruan Zilan, were known as the three 'Living Gods of Wealth' in Chinese folklore. These aspects highlight their financial power, and even more remarkable is that the Kang family maintained their wealth for twelve generations over more than four hundred years, demonstrating the difficulty of maintaining wealth, the strictness of family discipline, and the firmness of their will.
Currently, the main preserved parts of Kangbaiwan Manor include the main residential area, warehouse area, South Courtyard, ancestral hall area, and ten other sections. Its architectural style is fortress-like (buildings along the street, cave dwellings against the mountain, docks by the river, and fortified walls), retaining the forms of Loess Plateau dwellings and northern quadrangles, while incorporating features of official residences, gardens, and military fortresses. Unlike the styles of Shanxi merchants (such as the Qiao Family Compound), Huizhou merchants (such as Huizhou Merchant Mansions), and guilds, it is the most unique ancient architectural group among Central Plains dwellings.
🌟Core highlights within the manor:
First-class stone-carved door threshold stones according to national stone carving grading standards, a golden nanmu wood-carved canopy bed that took over 17,000 hours to complete, the Wang family stone-carved archway, the Kang Lin three-stele pavilion of brick carvings, the chastity archway built with imperial permission during the Qing Dynasty, the moon-worship table embodying family traditions, and the 'Leave Some' plaque, one of China's famous plaques; as well as items and places reflecting the Kang family's wealth, such as the riverboat, the large abacus, and the gold and silver vault.
Among these, I find the two most meaningful artifacts to be the 'Leave Some' plaque and the moon-worship table, as the family teachings inscribed on these artifacts are the epitome of the Kang family's ability to maintain wealth for fourteen generations.
The 'Leave Some' plaque, now hanging in the main residential area of Kangbaiwan Manor, is a family teaching plaque for educating the Kang family's descendants. It is also a concentrated embodiment of the Confucian doctrine of the mean, 'Do not exhaust your wealth, do not exhaust your power.' The 'Leave Some' plaque has a unique shape, resembling an unfolded flag with a concave top and convex bottom. The concave top signifies 'leaving some for the heavens,' being accountable to the court; the convex bottom signifies 'leaving some for the earth,' being accountable to the people and descendants. The plaque contains seventy-four characters, with the main text reading: 'The Taoist of Leaving Some inscribed four maxims: Leave some skill, do not exhaust it, to return to nature; leave some salary, do not exhaust it, to return to the court; leave some wealth, do not exhaust it, to return to the people; leave some blessings, do not exhaust them, to return to the descendants. For nature abhors excess, and things done to the extreme often lead to regret.'
The moon-worship table is located within the Kang family courtyard, with a mirror embedded in the ground below the table and an inscription on the bottom of the table (the back side): 'A stubborn stone, who says it has spirit? Who knows that after carving, it can reveal its true nature. Scrape off the dirt and polish it, its edges and corners are like jade. The pillars above and below are like hills, the shape and form reflect the virtue...' This teaches the descendants to understand poetry and propriety. The ingenious design lies in the correspondence between the mirror and the inscription, and the mirror's correspondence with the bright moon. Every Mid-Autumn Festival, when the Kang family worships the moon at the moon-worship table, the moonlight shines on the mirror, and the host instructs the descendants to look at the inscription in the mirror, reminding them to pass on the family tradition through poetry and books, strive for progress, maintain wealth with difficulty, and be humble.

The small and beautiful grotto temple is worth a visit
Gongyi Grotto Temple is located in Siwan Village, Heluo Town, Gongyi City, Zhengzhou, Henan Province, nestled on the south bank of the Yellow River, the north bank of the Yiluo River, and at the foot of Mount Dali, 10 kilometers from the city center. Bus route 66 can take you directly to the parking lot at the temple's entrance.
The grotto temple was built during the Northern Wei Dynasty, originally named Xixuan Temple, renamed to 'Shifang Jingtusi' during the Song Dynasty, and renamed again to Grotto Temple during the Qing Dynasty. It was a place where Northern Wei emperors and empresses held Buddhist ceremonies. Later, Emperor Taizong of Tang and the royal family of the Northern Song Dynasty also held Buddhist events here, leaving behind a large number of precious statues and inscriptions.
Most of the ancient buildings in the grotto temple no longer exist, and the only ancient buildings in the temple today are the main hall and east and west wing rooms from the Ming Dynasty. After entering through the mountain gate, there are bell and drum towers on both sides, with the bell ringing in the morning and the drum at dusk, which is deafening. A small path leads straight to the Mahavira Hall, with two arched doors on both sides, each with a plaque above. The plaque on the west side reads 'Mijin Fudu' (Lost Ferry, Again Crossed), and the one on the east reads 'Juelu Chongkai' (Path of Enlightenment, Reopened). Turning right after exiting the west arched door and walking fifty meters, you will reach the Gongyi Grottoes. The Gongyi Grottoes are the most valuable part of the temple to visit, with over seven thousand Buddha niches and statues distributed within the 120-meter-long grotto complex. Especially, the 'Emperor and Empress Worshiping Buddha' mural in the first cave is the most complete and unique piece preserved in the country, truly a priceless treasure. I will write another article specifically about the Gongyi Grottoes.
Normal visitors would leave after viewing the statues in the grotto temple, but if you climb the stairs on the west side of the first cave, there are two more ancient sites. One is the Forest of Steles, which displays inscriptions from the Tang, Song, Jin, Ming, and Qing dynasties, recording the changes and repairs of the grotto temple over the ages, some of which are no longer clear. The second is the Han Garden, which is the half-cave at the northwest corner of the entire scenic area. It's hard to distinguish with the naked eye. I didn't bring glasses or a flashlight, and after looking for a long time, I really didn't see anything. When I left, I asked the staff, who said that on the wall directly opposite inside, there is an inscription from the Eastern Han period, hence the name Han Garden. Perhaps it was not meant to be for me to see it, so I'm giving everyone a heads-up to see if there are any destined visitors who can successfully spot it.
There is a solid Tang Dynasty pagoda on Mount Dali, which is a geomantic pagoda that cannot be climbed, but can be viewed from both inside and outside the temple.
Gongyi Grotto Temple is backed by mountains and faces water, with an elegant environment and beautiful scenery, known as the sacred place of 'Creek Mist and Rock Clouds,' and the 'Evening Bell of the Grotto Temple' is one of the eight scenic spots of Gong County. The area of the grotto temple is not large, and a normal visit takes about two hours, but for avid grotto enthusiasts, it is possible to spend several days here. After all, although the Gongyi Grotto Temple is small in size, the quality of its statues is very high, and there are many epoch-making sculptures, which we will talk about later.
The ticket is only thirty yuan, and I highly recommend going in for a visit, and suggest pairing it with a visit to the Kang Baiwan Manor.

Yongzhao Mausoleum—the resting place of Emperor Renzong of the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhao Zhen
Yongzhao Mausoleum is the resting place of Emperor Renzong of the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhao Zhen, who was the sixth son of Emperor Zhenzong, Zhao Heng, and the crown prince in the folk tale 'The Civet Cat Exchanged for the Prince'. Born in the third year of Dazhong Xiangfu (1010 AD), he reigned for forty-two years. During his reign, science and culture flourished, and the country was at its zenith. He passed away in the eighth year of Jiayou (1063 AD) and was buried in Yongzhao Mausoleum (present-day Gongyi City). The entire mausoleum complex follows the principles of Feng Shui and geomancy, built according to the terrain, nestled against mountains and near water, consisting of the 'Emperor's Mausoleum', 'Empress's Mausoleum', and 'Xia Gong'. The stone statues along the Sacred Way are tall and imposing, with more than twenty pairs of symmetrically arranged stone figures, stone tigers, stone horses, and stone vermilion birds, among others. The warriors are tall and valiant, loyally guarding the palace gates, the stone tigers are powerfully and robustly sculpted, the stone sheep have a serene and delicate appearance, and the stone vermilion birds with wings spread as if ready to fly are particularly exquisitely carved.

A refreshing place in Zhengzhou that doesn't require an entrance fee / Gongyi Butterfly Valley
✅ Gongyi Butterfly Valley
There's a stream, an abandoned church⛪️
And a must-visit for couples: the intertwined branches~
We went there on a rainy day again🌧️
Walking in the drizzle creates a unique mood
The path down is paved with flagstones, some of which may wobble
Some paths are quite narrow, so be careful
After about half an hour, we reached the stream
The rain had stopped, and the air was exceptionally fresh after the rain
Our goal this time was specifically to catch fish in the stream
We played for an hour or two
Didn't catch a single fish in the end, but there were plenty of tadpoles
Still, it was a lot of fun~
On the way back, we even saw a rainbow and the sunset, it was simply too beautiful!
The overall scenery is nice, and it's a good place to bring children since the stream isn't deep
(Ps: Although the scenery is beautiful, we need to protect it. Please take your trash with you when you leave~)
