Tojinbo Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Cliffs and precipices, where the sea and sky merge into one
One must-visit landmark in Fukui is Tojinbo, which is said to be a famous suicide spot in Japan. I have no interest in this legend, but Tojinbo itself is indeed very beautiful. The majestic natural landscape formed by the erosion of the sea waves is best described as cliffs and precipices, where the sea and sky merge into one. Although the transportation from the city is not particularly convenient, it is still very worthwhile to visit.
The scenic cliffs made by wave erosion stretch for about one kilometer. An awesome creation of raging waves in the Japan Sea. This is a world wonder and I am surprised that the tour buses have not found their way here. This place is probably Japan’s best kept secret for the locals to enjoy and not open to too much foreign tourists. The cliffs and rock formations are amazing!! Beyond description!! It was very windy so the waves was big and furious and it formed the most amazing pictures. If you get a chance, do come for a day trip and enjoy the Sea of Japan, the beautiful cliffs, and the sea breeze.

Perhaps you have seen the Japanese TV drama "Five Nights and Nine" will be impressed by the big crab inside, and the Echizen crab in Fukui Prefecture is one of the most famous crab brands in Japan. It grows in the deep sea, and it can only be harvested in limited quantities in winter. Every year from November to March, there will be tourists flying specially for a delicious crab. The hot spring hotel Minoya Taiping Pavilion, which we stayed at night, is located in Awara Onsen, built between the fields. The pure Japanese-style luxury courtyard and the sea of seafood from the Sea of Japan, plus the hot springs that can heal the body and mind, what troubles can not be abandoned?
Fukui, although not as famous as Kyoto and Hokkaido, is not as crowded as the major attractions. There is a hot spring in Awara, and there is a delicious crab that is directly available to the Emperor - the Echizen crab. Each hotel in Awara Onsen Town has a fun and luxurious courtyard with a Japanese character and a sea of seafood. It is very healing. The hotel we stayed in was a hobby-style hot spring hotel in Minoya. If you have seen the Japanese drama "Five Nights and Nine", you will be impressed by the big crab, and the Echizen crab in Fukui Prefecture is one of the most famous crabs in Japan. It grows in the deep sea and can only be harvested in limited quantities in winter. Every year from November to March, there will be tourists who fly over a special product. After we checked in and put down our luggage, we were eager to have a full crab feast in the room. per person! Sashimi, tempura, Echizen crab three eat (hot pot, fried, steamed). Maruoka Castle Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Claim to be one of the oldest castle in Japan but being reconstructed after destroying by the earthquake a couple years ago. This is quite a small castle, but a lot of fun to climb up the steep wooden ladder like interior stairs to get to the next floor. Luckily there is a sturdy rope to hang onto to help you up and down. It's easier than it looks, but I wouldn't recommend it for the very young or very old. The views out the windows at the top are lovely. One direction you have mountains, the other direction you have the city. If I remember correctly there is a model map of the area, and old black and white photos of other famous Japanese castles up around the walls.
You have to take off your shoes at the entrance so as not to scuff or dirt the lovely wooden floors.
There are friendly guides and attendants at the entrance, but don't expect them to speak English.
Overall it was a good experience!

Maruoka Castle (Maruoka Castle) in Fukui City
Maruoka Castle, an ancient castle situated on a small hill in the northern part of Fukui City, is considered one of the oldest castle towers remaining in Japan and is the only one left in the Hokuriku region. The structure of the castle is a small wooden construction with three floors, and visitors can enter and view the inside of the castle.
Around the castle, there are over 400 cherry trees planted, making it a beautiful cherry blossom viewing spot in the city (from early to mid-April) and it is recognized as one of the top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan. A cherry blossom festival is held here every year.
Admission fee: 450 yen
Access: 50 minutes by bus from Fukui Station
Asuwayama Park Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Roads connect various areas on Asuwayama, making an interesting park near Fukui station. The park is walkable, though all paths are roads so sometimes need to be careful with cars. The main attraction is the zoo, which is free to enter, though closed during winter based on the signage posted near the entrance. Lots to see and do not only the petting zoo, it has the shrines, temples, gardens, and the Natural History museum. Asuwayama Park is an excellent area, but you will need a car or bicycle to make the most of it, as it is large and spread out but if you are like me, everything will be done on foot.
