Encounter Zhenjiang: A Day Traveling Through a Thousand Years, Meeting the Yangtze River Sunset Date

What I thought would be a coincidental holiday trip turned out to be full of surprises in Zhenjiang! I originally thought it was an overlooked corner on Jiangsu’s tourism map, but this city hides endless wonders. In one day, I easily checked in at Jinshan, Beigu Mountain, and Jiaoshan—the "Three Mountains," strolled along the ancient Xijin Ferry Street, and encountered the stunning Yangtze River sunset at the Zhenyang Ferry. This trip was both fulfilling and romantic! My itinerary was: Jinshan - Beigu Mountain - Jiaoshan - Zhenyang Ferry. Xijin Ferry was visited the day before, but if you want to cover the "Three Mountains and One Ferry" in one day, there’s plenty of time. Early in the morning, head to the famous Jinshan Temple, which became popular nationwide because of the Legend of the White Snake. The scenic area thoughtfully provides a photo guide, and many visitors imitate the White Snake to leave their beautiful images. Fahai Cave is small and exquisite, usually closed on holidays; the inscription on the White Snake Cave rock saying "This cave leads directly to Hangzhou West Lake" adds a magical touch. The large white snake leisurely resting in the scenic area perfectly enhances the atmosphere of the White Snake legend. It’s best to arrive early when there are fewer people and beautiful scenery, perfect for photos and check-ins. Beigu Mountain has been a strategic river defense fortress since ancient times, famous for Xin Qiji’s poetry and as the place where Wen Tianxiang escaped crossing the river. Entering the scenic area, the 1,200-year-old Iron Pagoda quietly tells stories of the past; the "Number One River and Mountain Under Heaven" stone carving from the Southern Song Dynasty is said to have been praised first by Liu Bei; although Ganlu Temple has been rebuilt on a smaller scale, it still attracts countless visitors as the site of Liu Bei’s marriage proposal legend. Among the three mountains, Jiaoshan is less famous but my personal favorite. The Jiaoshan Stele Forest houses the Six Dynasties cliff inscription "Epitaph of the Crane," which fell into the river for over 700 years and amazed the world when rediscovered. It witnessed the transformation from seal script to regular script and is known as the "ancestor of large characters" and "crown of calligraphers." The Daxiong Hall of Dinghui Temple is a treasure of architectural art, with dragon and phoenix carvings on the roof assembled cleverly without nails, using small wooden blocks, showcasing ancient wisdom in the flying eaves and brackets. There is also a large ancient cannon platform, with bunkers and ammunition depots arranged in a fan shape, making you feel like you’ve traveled back to a smoky battlefield. Jiaoshan Scenic Area closes late, with the last ferry departing at 5 PM. We finished touring by 4 PM and took bus No. 10 at the scenic area entrance directly to Zhenyang Ferry. At Zhenyang Ferry, it only costs 3 yuan to cross the Yangtze River by boat. Waiting on the deck for sunset, the afterglow shines on the river, sparkling with golden light—this 3-yuan romance is definitely worth the ticket price! We boarded the boat nearly an hour before sunset, so don’t be like us—arrive earlier because the sunset’s "mood" is unpredictable and can quickly hide behind clouds. Around 7 PM, after the sunset trip, you can arrive at Xijin Ferry and start the night tour of the ancient street. To help you enjoy better, here are some practical tips: 1. Food pairing: Zhenjiang morning tea is famous far and wide. Why not enjoy a hearty morning tea near Jinshan Temple before leisurely exploring the scenic area? 4. Dining guide: After visiting Beigu Mountain, it’s almost mealtime. Phoenix Square is an excellent choice for lunch, where you can have a satisfying meal without long queues.
