Zhatang Monastery was built in 1081 and took 13 years to complete. It was founded by Zhaba Enxieba, one of the 13 sages of Zhanang, during the "Later Propagation" of Tibetan Buddhism. The early Zhatang Monastery was built according to the Mandala concept of Esoteric Buddhism, with a rigorous layout, clear movement lines, and three courtyards and a Buddha hall. The only ancient building in Zhatang Monastery is the Dukang Hall, which consists of a central hall and a worship corridor and is relatively small in scale. Beautiful fusion of mural art The murals in the rear hall of Zhatang Monastery are masterpieces by 11th-century Tibetan artists who absorbed and integrated the artistic styles of India, Nepal, and the Han region based on the Tubo mural style. These unique murals are only partially preserved in Shalu Monastery in Shigatse, and have not been found in other regions. The "Sakyamuni Preaching" and "Manjusri and Samantabhadra Debating" murals on both sides of the main Buddha in the center of the hall are particularly precious. Early Tibetan medical engravings The monastery now houses the "Zhatang Medical Four Continuations" by Master Zhaba Enxieba, which is the earliest medical engraving in Tibet. It is directly or indirectly related to the two most influential Yutok Yonten Gonpo in the history of Tibetan medicine, and not only benefited the people suffering from diseases at that time, but also became the basis for many Tibetan medical theories later. By the way, be sure to visit the Dharma Protector Hall on the second floor. To this day, this ancient Buddha hall continues to unearth history and absorb different artistic colors, like a museum spanning the long river of history, showing visitors.
