Yusuhara Town is located on the border with Ehime Prefecture. The town is called the "town above the clouds" because it is home to the Shikoku Karst, a high plateau at an altitude of 1,455m, and 91% of the town's area is covered by forest. It is also known for having many buildings by world-famous architect Kengo Kuma. The Library Above the Clouds that we visited this time is a public library that opened in 2018. There is a space where local people can chat, and a library space at the back of the cafe. We explored the building, captivated by the ceiling that combines wood, as seen in Kengo Kuma's architecture. The building, which makes abundant use of wood from Yusuhara, had a relaxing and soft atmosphere. The "Yusuhara Stage" in the center of the library This stage, which can also be used as an event space, allows you to sit on the steps and read a book. In addition, the steps are designed to store books, and children's books were stored there. If I were a child, I might have crouched down and looked for a book as if I was on an adventure, then sat down and read it. It is a place visited by locals, remote workers, and tourists.
