Temperatures often fall below −20°C. Long winters, heavy snow. Mountain Areas (Tianshan, etc.) Also very cold; snow lasts many months. Mountain passes can be blocked. Clear skies often, especially at higher altitudes. Southern Xinjiang / Desert Areas (Taklamakan etc.) Cold too, but milder compared to the high mountains and north. Desert areas can get snow, which makes for striking contrasts (white snow on dunes). Days often sunny but very cold at night.
