Lake Kinrin in Kyushu

Lake Kinrin, located in the hot spring town of Yufuin in Kyushu, was named in 1884 by the Japanese Confucian scholar Mouri Sora when he saw the sparkling waves under the setting sun, which resembled the shimmering scales of a fish. The hot springs that well up in the lake mix with the cold clear water, creating a unique atmosphere.
