Suspension Bridge

York’s original suspension footbridge first opened in 1888 after petitioning from residents for a footbridge to link pedestrian access east and west. A flood in 1891 saw the river flowing a metre above the foot-walk, but the bridge survived. The bridge was flooded again in 1893, widened and repaired in 1894 and further lengthened and moved to its current position in 1896.
