Train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya — The Most Convenient 4-Hour Journey

#springitinerary Taking the train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya is by far the easiest and most convenient way to travel between the two cities—it takes about 4 hours. We took an early train departing at 6:45 AM. We booked business class tickets for about 300,000 IDR and the seats were really comfortable, complete with footrests and charging ports. Perfect for a relaxed trip! Traffic in Yogyakarta is as chaotic as anywhere else in Indonesia. Normally, it takes about half an hour to get from the city center hotels to the train station during the day. But since we were catching an early train, we booked a Grab ride at 5:40 AM and—luckily!—arrived at the station by 5:55, just in time. (Before 6 AM, Grab rides took only 15 minutes.) The Yogyakarta train station building is quite beautiful from the outside. We used a self-service machine to pick up our tickets, then passed through ticket and passport checks to enter the platform area. The waiting lounge is open-air with comfy seats, and there’s also a VIP lounge that looked nice for those who want extra comfort. At 6 AM sharp, you’ll see hardworking Indonesians opening their laptops and getting to work while waiting—everyone’s hustling hard in Asia, no exceptions! #indonesia
