During the century-long war between the Ottomans and the Russians, the Ottomans continuously ceded territory and paid indemnities. They attributed the cause of their defeat to the pro-Russian Armenians, and used this as an excuse to drive out and massacre the Armenians in their territory. It is estimated that between 1 and 1.5 million Armenians were massacred by the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1923. It accounted for 50% of the Armenian population at that time.
