#100waysoftravel The Chinese city of Xianyang is located in Shaanxi Province, twenty-five kilometers northwest of Xi'an. Its population with suburbs is more than five million inhabitants. A city that has its own airport is an important transport hub. It has long been the center of the cotton industry and a major electronics manufacturing center. Xianyang also has a well-developed production of building materials, mechanical engineering, food, pharmaceutical and textile (wool) industries. In addition, the city has long been the commercial center of an agricultural area, where sheep farming, cotton, spices, tobacco and vegetable crops, as well as dairy production are developed. Starting from three hundred and fiftieth year before the beginning of our era, Xianyang was the capital of the kingdom of Qin, and starting from two hundred and twenty–first year before our era, it was the capital of the Qin Empire, which was formed as a result of the unification of Shi Huang and Qin. After this empire fell, Xianyang was almost completely burned down and eventually finally lost its status as an economic and cultural center. Due to its close geographical location to the capital Chang'an on the Great Silk Road, Xianyang continued to be one of the most important transit points. During excavations in the second half of the last century, archaeologists discovered the remains of a fortress wall on the territory of the city, several almost completely intact buildings, in which some frescoes, pottery workshops, as well as parts of ceramic pipes that may have served to create a water supply system, were well preserved. To the north of the city there are a large number of tombs of the Han emperors (for example, Wu-di), as well as generals of that time.
