Yangtao Courtyard: A Serene Retreat on Gulangyu Island

On Gulangyu Island, away from the bustling city, there is a serene and comfortable place that embodies the island's rich history and culture—Yangtao Courtyard. It is said that the owner, Wu Jin, has a love for Gulangyu and its over 1,000 old Western-style houses that goes beyond mere sentiment. Over a decade ago, she spent a year and a half restoring a nearly dilapidated old house. This dedication and passion make us believe that Yangtao Courtyard is far more than just a place for travelers to rest for the night. At first glance, the name might suggest a connection to starfruit, but what truly captivated me was the authentic experience of staying there. When the ancient wooden structures, meticulously designed, reappear before your eyes, you feel both the weight of history and the seamless integration of the architecture with the surrounding nature—a timeless beauty. I remember arriving on the island one evening around 7 PM. Dragging my luggage and following the navigation, I walked past bustling entertainment areas and famous snack streets, climbing upwards towards the renowned villa district. Soon, I saw the ancient courtyard gate, marked by the traces of time. The location of the gate is excellent—quiet and open. It hasn’t been overly modernized, retaining most of its historical features. It’s neither overly crowded nor excessively adorned—just right, like the poetic comparison of West Lake to a beauty, equally charming in light or heavy makeup. The courtyard’s service is also commendable. Besides being a great spot for sightseeing and photos, it offers a unique free breakfast prepared fresh by the staff every morning, with unlimited servings. Guests can relax in the courtyard during their free time, chatting, drinking tea, enjoying music, or even composing poetry. Historically, many literary figures have visited this place. The guest rooms are uniquely designed, distinct from traditional modern hotels. The vintage wooden textures and cozy arrangements provide an inexplicable sense of security, making you feel right at home. During my stay on the island, I enjoyed restful sleep, leisurely breakfasts, and relaxed strolls through the streets and shops. It almost felt like being in Dali, experiencing the simple and genuine local culture. If you’re unfamiliar with anything, you can always ask the staff, who can help you avoid buying inauthentic souvenirs on the island. The staff also take care of two cats, lovingly tending to them every day. It’s said that the cats have gone missing several times but always found their way back home from far corners of the island. Even the cats have formed an inseparable bond with the courtyard.
