Hainan Provincial Ethnic Museum

The Hainan Provincial Ethnic Museum is located at No. 5 Taifei Road, Wuzhishan City. It was planned in the autumn of 1981 and opened to the public on October 1, 1986. Its predecessor was the Ethnic Museum of Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. After the establishment of Hainan Province, it was renamed as Hainan Provincial Ethnic Museum. The museum mainly focuses on archaeological excavations, collections, research and display of Hainan ethnic relics, and studies the history of Hainan Island and the traditional culture of ethnic groups such as Li, Miao, and Hui. It is a comprehensive museum and an important research base for ethnology and folklore in Hainan Province, and a base for patriotic education in Hainan Province. In September 2014, it was demolished and rebuilt, with a total investment of more than 80 million for the construction of the first phase of the main project and the display supporting project. It reopened to the public on February 11, 2018. The new museum building is located on the mountain and faces the city. It has a traditional Chinese courtyard-style building, which is unique in style and magnificent. The museum covers an area of 52 acres and an exhibition area of 3,000 square meters. After reopening, it launched the basic display - 'Qiongzhou Folk Customs', divided into three exhibition halls: Hainan Ethnic History and Culture Display, Hainan Ethnic Textile Culture Display, and Hainan Ethnic Art Display, and two special exhibitions - Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition and Ceramic Exhibition. Among them, the two special exhibitions are used for exhibition exchanges. Since the reopening, more than 10 exhibitions have been held for 'going out' and 'bringing in'. The exhibition introduces the history of Hainan and the ethnic origins, occupations, social life, and cultural customs of ethnic groups such as Li, Miao, and Hui through objects, texts, and pictures. The exhibition integrates knowledge, science, art, and fun, and is an important window for domestic and foreign guests and museum colleagues to understand the history of Hainan and the excellent traditional culture of ethnic minorities.
