The Icon of Wuhan- The Yellow Crane Tower

Yellow Crane Tower is located on Snake Hill in Wuhan, Hubei Province. Enjoying the fame of 'The First Scenery Under Heaven', it is one of the most renowned towers south of the Yangtze River. Its cultural significance led to it being made the symbol of Wuhan City. The Yellow Crane Tower has a very long and complicated history. It was first built in 223, during the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280). Due to its ideal location, it was built by Sun Quan (182-252, King of Wu) as a watchtower for his army. After hundreds of years, its military function was gradually forgotten and the tower was enjoyed mainly as a picturesque location. Visit this Icon of Wuhan and enjoy the view of Yangtze River! #wuhan #discoverchina #hubei

Yellow Crane Tower

The Yellow Crane Tower is Wuhan's most famous attraction. The original 黄鹤楼 was built in AD 223 but it has been rebuilt several times since then. In fact, the tower has been said to mirror the fortunes of China itself. The previous iteration burnt down in the late Qing Dynasty, when Wuhan was a treaty port forced open by the Great Powers. The current version, a convincing copy of the Qing tower (with the addition of a lift for those unable to climb the many stairs) was built during the PRC's opening up in the 1980s. Yellow Crane Tower overlooks the Yangtze and is in a lovely park containing another tower, tranquil gardens and a giant bell you can ring for a modest donation. I recommend going in the mid- to late-afternoon so you can spend a couple of hours enjoying the park before climbing the tower in time to see the sunset. Admission is a little steep but don't cheap out. It's really worth going if you're in Wuhan. #qingmingtravel #urbanexplorer #lightthecity #wuhan #hubei #yellowcranetower #tower #pagoda #views #photography #weekendtrip #roadtrip #history #historical #historicallandmarks
