Weimar, Germany, the cultural capital of Europe

Weimar is a city of 65,000 people in the central German state of Thuringia. Together with the neighboring cities of Erfurt and Jena, it forms the central metropolitan area of ​​Thuringia with about 500,000 inhabitants. Weimar is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and importance in German history. The city was a focal point of the German Enlightenment and the home of the leaders of the Weimar Classicist literary school, writers Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. In the 19th century, famous composers such as Franz Liszt turned Weimar into a musical center. Weimar had a turbulent political history in the 20th century. It was the place where Germany's first democratic constitution was signed after World War I, it was named in German politics for the Weimar Republic period from 1918 to 1933, and it was one of the cities mythologized by National Socialist propaganda. Until 1948, Weimar was the capital of Thuringia. Many of the classical Weimar buildings in the city center, the Bauhaus buildings, and some of the buildings related to the Bauhaus Art School have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. World Heritage tourism is one of Weimar's main sources of income. Notable institutions in Weimar are the Bauhaus University, the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, the Duchess Anna Amalia Library and the Supreme Administrative and Constitutional Courts of Thuringia. Johann Sebastian Bach, a famous German composer and musician of the late Baroque period, served as court organist in Weimar from 1708 to 1717. In 1999, Weimar was named European Capital of Culture.
