St.Mark Basilica from the square

St. Mark's Basilica of Venice was built to enshrine the remains of the patron saint, St. Mark. It is a representative building of Byzantine architecture, and the floors, columns, walls, and ceilings are lavishly decorated everywhere. The golden partition "Pala d'Oro" studded with nearly 2,000 jewels is a major highlight. From the balcony on the second floor, you can get a panoramic view of St. Mark's Square. St. Mark's Basilica took its current form in the 11th century, incorporating various styles such as Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance. The mosaics that decorate the ceiling and floors of the cathedral are the highlight of the building. They are made by embedding small pieces of glass about 3mm to 4mm square. It is said that the creation took about eight centuries, and it is a work of art that symbolizes the prosperity of Venice in the past. Please note that it is prohibited to visit the cathedral in revealing clothing or with large luggage such as suitcases. #italy #venice #historicallandmarks
