How to catch a train from Mongolia to China

After a month in Mongolia, I eagerly set my sights on China, specifically Beijing. Initially, I anticipated a seamless train journey from Ulaanbaatar to Beijing, but discovered that the direct train was no longer in operation. Instead, my route would involve a combination of trains and buses across the border. I took an overnight train from Ulaanbaatar to the border town of Zamiin Uud, a comfortable 14-hour ride departing at 5:40 PM for around €24. Unfortunately, my excitement was short-lived when I found out that my arrival on September 17th coincided with a National Holiday in China, meaning the border was closed. After a frustrating day and a grim hotel stay for €17, I had to rearrange my travel plans. I faced two options: a 10-hour sleeper bus to Beijing, notorious for its discomfort and late-night arrival, or a more appealing route involving a 7-hour train from Erlian to Hohhot and then a 2.5-hour speed train to Beijing. Ultimately, I chose the latter for a more pleasant journey. Navigating the bus system to reach Erlian was a challenge, but a helpful local guided me to the bus station for a ticket costing €7. Crossing the border was straightforward with minimal wait times, and I soon found myself in China. With nearly 11 hours to explore before my train to Beijing, the unexpected detour turned into an opportunity to discover new sights and experiences.
