Wat Sri Ubonrattanaram (Wat Sri Thong), Ubon Ratchathani Province

Located on the south side of the provincial hall on Uparat Road, built in 1855, this temple has a chapel built in the style of the chapel of Wat Benchamabophit, Bangkok, and is home to the city's most revered Buddha image. Wat Sri Ubon Rattanaram, formerly known as Wat Sri Thong, is a Thammayut sect temple located on the south side of Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Hall on Uparat Road. It was built in the year of the Rabbit, 1855, corresponding to R.S. 74, the fifth year of the reign of King Rama IV of the Chakri Dynasty. This temple has a chapel built in the style of the chapel of Wat Benchamabophit, Bangkok, and is home to the city's most revered Buddha image, the Emerald Buddha. The temple's location was originally the garden of Upahad Tho (the ancestor of the Na Ubon family). A generous donor donated approximately 25 rai of land to build a temple for the Thammayut sect. Which is a new monkhood that was just established at the end of the reign of King Rama III. The donation of land in front of the monk, giving it to be a property of Buddhism to be the location of the temple. At night of that day, a strange vision occurred, which was a bright golden light shining up in that garden. Therefore, this auspicious vision was taken to name the temple "Wat Sri Thong". On the monkhood side, Than Thewathammi (Mao) was appointed as the first abbot. He began constructing the monk's residence, the temple, and the sermon hall in the year 2398. According to history, Than Thewathammi went to study Buddhist scriptures in Bangkok since he was a novice. He became a disciple of King Rama IV when he was ordained. Therefore, he followed the Thammayut sect and continued to establish the Thammayut sect at Wat Supattanaram Worawihan, which is the first Thammayut sect temple in the northeastern region. With Than Phanthulo (Dee) as the first abbot, Than Thewathammi was considered a senior monk who was respected and feared by all monks, novices, government officials, and the general public at that time. Later, in 1968, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the current monarch, and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit came to perform the ceremony to celebrate the installation of the boundary stone and the raising of the gable of the ordination hall of Wat Sri Ubon Rattanaram.
