Wat Buppharam, Trat

Wat Buppharam is located in Wang Krachae Subdistrict, Mueang District, Trat Province, approximately 2 kilometers west of the city center. It is the oldest temple in Trat Province. According to the registration evidence from the Department of Religious Affairs, this temple was built since the Ayutthaya period. In addition to the name of Wat Buppharam, it has been used by nearby villagers to call it by different names. These three different names are based on the location and environment: Wat Noen Yong because this temple is located on a hill with a type of tree called Yong growing in large numbers; Wat Pak Thang because this temple is located at the entrance to the road leading out of the province to the west; Wat Plai Khlong is the most popular name because it is located in the area of ​​Ban Plai Khlong (this village is located at the end of Khlong Bang Phra). As for the reason why it is called Wat Buppharam, the villagers have told each other that in the past, there were many types of flowers and fruits in the village and the temple area that bloomed and bore fruit in season, all of which were beautiful in color and gave off a fragrant smell. In particular, in the temple area, there are many types of trees used for making Thai medicine and perfume. There is also another story that has been passed down that Before building this temple, there was a survey to find a place to build a temple. When the survey team arrived at this area, they smelled the fragrant scent of flowers all over the area, but they could not find the tree that was the source of the scent. Therefore, they agreed that it would be a good sign to build a temple in this area. After it was built, it was named “Wat Buppharam”, which means a flower garden temple. #historicculture
