With the Odaiba sea breeze caressing my face, I stood in front of DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, gazing up at the 18-meter-tall Unicorn Gundam. The setting sun cast its lasting rays across its white armor, making it seem poised to transform and soar into the sky. This behemoth is more than just a model; it's a sacred icon for countless anime fans, carrying the spirit and dreams of the Gundam series for forty years. Every hour, the crowd waits with bated breath. The lights flash, the armor slowly unfolds, the horn-like antenna on its head splits in two, and its eyes glow a sharp blue. Accompanied by classic background music, the Unicorn Gundam truly comes to life, transforming from Unicorn Mode to Destroy Mode in a spectacular display. Children gasp in wonder, while adults raise their phones to capture this perfect fusion of mechanics and art. In the Gundam Base shop, model enthusiasts immerse themselves in a dazzling array of merchandise. From the latest RG series to classic MG models, this is a Gundam fan's paradise. I caress a set of exquisite PG models, imagining the feeling of accomplishment after assembling them. Outside, a life-size display of Gundam heads evokes the feeling of being in the cockpit, allowing you to experience the thrill of being Amuro Ray. As dusk fell, I boarded the Yurikamome Line from Odaiba, bound for Tokyo Tower. The train weaved through the skyscrapers of the Bay Area. The illuminated Rainbow Bridge, visible from the window, shone beautifully against the distant Tokyo Tower. This route is undoubtedly Tokyo's most romantic train ride, with modern architecture and the nightscape blending beautifully before your eyes. Exiting Kamiyacho Station, the orange-red Tokyo Tower towered majestically against the night sky. Standing since 1958, this broadcast tower, surpassed in height by Tokyo Skytree, remains a classic symbol of Tokyo. I chose to visit at night because I heard Tokyo Tower has a unique charm at night, and it proved true. From the main observation deck, 150 meters above sea level, the expansive Tokyo nightscape unfolds through the glass windows. Unlike the modern vistas of Tokyo Skytree, the view from here evokes a nostalgic feeling of the Showa era. Beneath my feet was the pulsating pulse of the city, and in the distance, I could even glimpse the glimmer of Odaiba, echoing the distant lights of the Gundam seen in the evening. Understandingly, Tokyo Tower's base features a passageway, "Tokyo Tower Foot Town," running directly through the tower's pillars. At night, the lights illuminate it from below, creating a breathtaking visual effect. Standing directly below, the red and white steel tower seemed to reach the sky, making one feel dwarfed. Back at the hotel, sorting through my photos, I stumbled upon a distant shot that included both the Odaiba Gundam and Tokyo Tower—although I had to zoom in to see it clearly. These two iconic structures, one representing Japan's postwar cultural output and technological imagination, the other symbolizing economic recovery and modernization, together tell the story of Tokyo. That night, I realized that Tokyo's charm lies in this seamless blend of past and future. From the sci-fi colossus of Odaiba to the timeless icon of Tokyo Tower, every step is a journey through time.
