Detailed Archive Information for the "MAM Project 028: SI ON" Exhibition ■ Dates and Location • Exhibition Period: Friday, July 31, 2020 - Sunday, January 3, 2021 • Venue: Mori Art Museum (53rd floor, Roppongi Hills Mori Tower) ■ About the Artist • SI ON: Born in Dangjin, South Korea in 1979. Currently resides in Krakow, Poland. After graduating from Makuen University in South Korea, he earned his PhD from the Kyoto City University of Arts Graduate School. Formerly known as Hyun Gyon, he changed his name to his current one in 2019. ■ Exhibition Contents and Representative Works • Shion's creative style is characterized by mixing paint with multiple materials, such as Styrofoam, fabric, and chewing gum, and then using techniques such as melting the surface with a gas burner to create vibrantly colored, deformed monsters, skeletons, and other grotesque images. His paintings combine multilayered themes, including Korean shamans (mudang), pop culture, and the artist's own emotions.  • The exhibition's new installation, "Doomsday," forms a giant wave made of over three tons of clothing, with a small chapel and sculptures installed within. The artist states, "The giant wave suggests the destruction caused by mass consumption and the unstoppable nature of capitalist society itself." The small chapel can also be interpreted as a symbol of powerlessness and, at times, the remaining hope of salvation.  • The colors and motifs allude to Mudan decorative culture, Polish Catholic culture, mass consumption, and environmental issues, realistically reflecting Zion's own experiences and emotions along with the multifaceted nature of modern society.  ■ The Significance of the Viewing Experience This exhibition not only offers a visual impact, but also offers viewers an opportunity to connect with the depths of thought and emotion through the social and cultural context of the works and the artist's words.
