"The beautiful Western-style residence of the Hatoyama family appeared on the Otowa Hill in Bunkyo Ward in Taisho 13, the year after the Great Kanto Earthquake. The Hatoyama family produced and nurtured leading politicians for four generations: Kazuo (1856–1911), a member of the House of Representatives; Ichiro (1883–1959), who became Prime Minister; Iichiro (1918–1993), who served as Foreign Minister; and Yukio (born 1947) and Kunio (born 1948), both members of the House of Representatives. Ichiro built this Western-style residence, and it was here that the founding of the Liberal Party (now the Liberal Democratic Party), which marked a turning point in postwar politics, was planned. Preparations for the restoration of Japan-Soviet diplomatic relations, decided upon by the Prime Minister, were also made here.
