Tianjin – The Emperor's Ferry, Gateway to the Capital

Among China's four direct-controlled municipalities, Beijing and Shanghai need no introduction—as super-first-tier cities, they stand above all others. Chongqing, with its vast area, has earned the playful title of the world's largest city, though it's more of a jest. Yet, Chongqing has become an internet sensation thanks to its 8D magical cityscape and hotpot. In comparison, Tianjin is the most understated of the four, much like Shantou's position among the four special economic zones. But if you take the time to explore, Tianjin has plenty to offer. The name "Tianjin" means "the Emperor's Ferry." It was here that Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty crossed the Hai River, embarking on the Jingnan Campaign, a journey that altered both his own fate and that of the Ming Dynasty. After seizing the throne, Emperor Yongle moved the capital to Beijing, and the place where he once crossed the river was named Tianjin. The city flourished with the prosperity of the Grand Canal. In modern times, as Western powers arrived by sea—whether for invasion or diplomacy—Tianjin became the closest landing point to the imperial capital, Beijing. As a result, the Qing Dynasty fortified its defenses here and vigorously promoted Westernization, propelling Tianjin ahead of other cities to become a metropolis rivaling Shanghai in the north. After the founding of the People's Republic, Tianjin became a direct-controlled municipality, forming the Jing-Jin-Ji economic circle with Beijing and Hebei, and emerging as a vital economic hub in northern China. Though often joked about as living in Beijing's shadow, Tianjin is still a direct-controlled municipality—its "shortcomings" are only relative to Beijing. Compared to other non-municipalities, Tianjin more than holds its own. Though Tianjin's history isn't ancient, its glorious modern era has left behind a rich cultural heritage, much like Shanghai. Both cities took shape in modern times, with histories that essentially begin from that period. Shanghai has the Bund; Tianjin has Jinwan Plaza. Shanghai has Tianzifang; Tianjin has the Five Great Avenues—both are preserves of modern architecture, akin to international architectural expositions in the north and south. Tianjin's cuisine is also outstanding, from the famous Hui Muslim Street breakfasts to various local snacks, all unforgettable delights.
