Step into Chengkan, and you shall have a life without obstacles

"The ground that faces the sky and collects dew is called 'Cheng', and the depression is called 'Kan'", surrounded by eight mountains "just like the Eight Trigrams of the I Ching", the S-shaped Longxi River winds around the village forming a Yin-Yang fish shape. In the I Ching, 'Cheng' represents the Yang, and 'Kan' the Yin, hence the name 'Chengkan'. Chengkan, located at the southern foot of the Huangshan scenic area, is known as the 'Number One Feng Shui Village' and 'Eight Trigrams Village'. The Song Dynasty philosopher Zhu Xi praised it: 'Chengkan, the village of double excellence, the number one village in the south of the Yangtze River.' At the end of the Tang Dynasty, the cousins Luo Tianzhen and Luo Tianzhi settled here, becoming the ancestors of the Luo family. By the middle of the Ming Dynasty, the ancient village was perfected according to the structure of 'leaning against the mountain, surrounded by water, facing the screen', and according to the I Ching's principle of 'embracing Yin and holding Yang', reflecting the Eight Trigrams Feng Shui of 'Yin (Kan), Yang (Cheng), the unity of the two energies, and the harmony between heaven and man'. The ninety-nine alleys of the three streets are like a maze, with the layout of the four trigrams of the innate Eight Trigrams explaining the creation of all things by the interaction of water and fire, and the accommodation of all things by heaven and earth. The stream winds through the village, surrounded by eight large mountains, ingeniously blending the human trigrams with the natural Eight Trigrams, a miracle of ancient Chinese village Feng Shui. Chengkan, which advocates 'Heaven, Earth, Monarch, Relatives, and Teacher', respects teachers and values education, with the tradition of reading and becoming officials, hanging plaques to honor ancestors and bring glory to the family. After the Song Dynasty, Huizhou merchants developed rapidly, and their financial strength was the foundation for the many plaques and celebrities in Chengkan. Su Dongpo inscribed in the 'Luo Family Genealogy': 'The names of civil virtue and military merit are left on bamboo and silk, and the true Confucian scholars of Neo-Confucianism continue from past to future.' Zhu Xi wrote in the preface to the 'Luo Family Genealogy': 'The family that has produced generations of imperial scholars is prominent, and is known as the foremost in She for its literary contributions.' Chengkan is known as the 'Hometown of National Treasures', with 21 national-level cultural relics; more than 150 ancient buildings from the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties, whose architectural craftsmanship and exquisite Huizhou carvings are the finest of ancient Huizhou; and more than 30 plaques inscribed by historical figures such as Dong Qichang and Lin Zexu.
