Map of Africa

Along the northwestern point of Africa, is the Caves of Hercules which is an archaeological cave complex located in Cape Spartel, 14 kilometers west of Tangier, Morocco. The cave has two openings, one to the sea and one to the land. The sea opening is known as " The Map of Africa", because there is a crack in the rock that resembles the outline of Africa. The cave itself is part natural and part man-made. The man-made part was used by Berber people to cut stone wheels from the walls. The lighting system, a feature of the latest restoration project, produces pleasant tones and contrasts. The caves were opened to the public in 1920, and declared as a National Heritage site in 1952.
