The Three Grand Shrines of Kumano Kodo

The three grand shrines, each with a unique geographical location, also possess distinct characteristics. Hongu Taisha, nestled in the tranquil mountains, exudes the elegance and grandeur of a refined lady. It is the most renowned of the three, requiring a 2-3 day hike along the ancient Kumano Kodo path to reach. Upon completing the entire pilgrimage, a ceremony is held, accompanied by the resounding beat of taiko drums, which we were fortunate to witness. Hayatama Taisha, situated in the small city of Shingu, embodies the charm and grace of a delicate maiden. Easily accessible by JR or bus, it offers a convenient visit. Nachi Taisha, perched atop Mount Nachi, stands as a heroic figure, radiating strength and vigor. Visitors can reach the foot of the mountain by car and then ascend the steps. Starting from Daimonzaka slope adds an extra challenge to the climb. However, this shrine boasts the most vibrant atmosphere and attracts numerous worshippers. Nearby, the breathtaking Nachi Falls and the iconic three-storied pagoda are also must-sees. The three grand shrines themselves offer limited areas for exploration, allowing for a quick tour, which might leave some visitors feeling slightly underwhelmed. Worth mentioning is the Xu Fu Park in Shingu, dedicated to the legendary figure who embarked on a quest for the elixir of immortality. Its magnificent gate makes it a worthwhile stop for a photo opportunity.
