Taichung Huangxi Academy

#September2025 Taichung's Huangxi Academy is a city-designated historical site that has witnessed a century of Taiwanese literary tradition. It skillfully blends the functions of an academy and a temple, serving as both a cradle of education during the Qing Dynasty and a center of worship today. Founded in 1887, the 13th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, Huangxi Academy formerly served as the "Xiyong Society," a gathering place for scholars. The building, a Minnan-style quadrangle courtyard, is renowned for its exquisite brick, stone, and wood carvings, earning it the reputation of being one of Taiwan's most exquisitely crafted academies. Enshrining Wenchang Emperor and five other deities within the academy, it is a popular destination for students seeking to pray for good luck in their exams. Key highlights include the unique eight-pillar, hip-and-gable-style worship hall, the exquisite brick-carved water corridor in front of the lecture hall, and the graceful crabapple-shaped moon gate within the Sanchuan Hall. The academy remains a cultural centerpiece for the local community, with deep ties to the nearby Dadu Elementary School, continuously promoting liberal arts education.
