"University of Technology Sydney (commonly known as UTS)" Business School "Dr Chau Chak Wing Building" (by Frank Gehry) Completed in 2015, this is the first Gehry building in Australia. "An organism that continues to grow and learn while extending the branches of thought." Based on this concept, Frank Gehry was inspired by tree houses to design the building, "not just to be a landmark, but to create synergy across fields within the space." Notable is the different facades on both sides, giving the building a completely different look from the east to the west. The east side is made of wavy bricks, referencing the sandstone tradition often seen in Sydney architecture, while the west side is made of contemporary angled glass. Even before the school opened, it was called a "crumpled brown paper bag" and was criticized by locals, who called it "a mountain of cardboard boxes soaking up rain and waiting for trash collection," "an insult to colonial architecture," and "a Gaudi in bad taste." It seems that Gehry's architecture doesn't get started unless someone tells you something like this.
