Orgaille Mountains, Jersey

Orgaille is a castle on the island of Jersey overlooking Gorey Harbour. Orgaille Castle is a Grade I listed building on the island of Jersey and was chosen as the cover image for the 50-pound Jersey paper issue in 2010. Arrowheads and pottery unearthed in the 1970s indicate that humans already lived here during the Neolithic period between 4000 BC and 2500 BC. Cape forts like these are found all over the north of Jersey as they provide refuge for the islanders from attackers, taking advantage of the natural defences of the high cliffs in that part of the island. The castle was originally called "Mont Orgeuil" by the French during the Wars of the Roses in 1462, following a decree issued by Lord Pierre de Breze during the French occupation of eastern Jersey. The castle underwent several expansions and renovations over the next few hundred years. During World War II from 1940 to 1945, the castle became a German military facility. The defense facilities at the foot of the nearby mountain (Figures 2-3) are still well preserved today.
