Bekasi, Indonesia: A Seriously Underrated Travel Destination

Hey everyone! Today, I'm sharing a hidden gem with you—Bekasi, Indonesia! This city boasts a rich cultural heritage and unique natural scenery. It's also super affordable, making it a must-see destination on your travel list📍 This guide is packed with useful tips, so like and save it now! Attractions 1. Ragunan Zoo: This is an animal paradise, home to over 3,000 animals, including rare species like Komodo dragons and Javan tigers🐅 The zoo is beautifully landscaped with lush greenery, making you feel like you're in an animal kingdom. Not only can you observe animals up close, but you can also participate in some interactive activities. It's perfect for families and animal lovers. 2. Bachachalang Mosque: This mosque has a unique architectural style, blending modern and traditional elements. Its white exterior shines brightly in the sunlight. Step inside to experience the tranquility and solemnity, and learn about Islamic culture and history. The mosque's exquisite decorations, wall patterns, and chandeliers are all very artistic, making it a great spot for taking photos. 3. Sukarno's Residence: If you want to learn about Indonesian history, this is a must-visit! Many items and documents from Sukarno's era are preserved here📜 By visiting his residence, you can gain a deeper understanding of the Indonesian independence movement and President Sukarno's life story. It's a place full of historical significance. Food Recommendations 1. Satay: Indonesia's national dish, satay, also has a unique flavor in Bekasi. Tender skewers of meat are grilled over charcoal until golden and crispy, then served with a rich peanut sauce. One bite, and you'll be in foodie heaven! Satay stalls are everywhere, and they're very affordable, so don't miss out. 2. Indonesian Fried Rice: This seemingly ordinary fried rice has a unique taste. The rice grains are distinct, and it's packed with ingredients like chicken, shrimp, eggs, and vegetables. Topped with a special sauce, every bite is full of flavor, making it an unforgettable dish. 3. Javanese Cake: This traditional Indonesian dessert is soft, glutinous, and sweet but not greasy. Made from glutinous rice, coconut milk, and sugar, it's sprinkled with coconut flakes, giving it a rich tropical flavor. It's the perfect choice for an after-dinner treat. Itinerary Day 1: Arrive in Bekasi → Check in to hotel → Enjoy local cuisine Upon arrival in Bekasi, check in to your hotel and drop off your luggage. Then, head to a nearby restaurant to sample the local cuisine. I recommend satay and Indonesian fried rice to kick off your Indonesian culinary journey. Day 2: Ragunan Zoo → Bachachalang Mosque In the morning, visit Ragunan Zoo and get up close and personal with adorable animals. When you're tired of walking, have a meal at the zoo's restaurant. In the afternoon, visit Bachachalang Mosque and experience the charm and cultural atmosphere of this religious building. Day 3: Sukarno's Residence → Free shopping → Prepare for departure In the morning, visit Sukarno's Residence and learn about Indonesian history. In the afternoon, you can visit the local market to buy some unique souvenirs. Then, pack your bags and prepare for your departure, concluding your pleasant trip to Bekasi. Transportation Guide ✈️ You can fly to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, then take a taxi, ride-hailing service, or bus to Bekasi. The journey takes about 1–2 hours. 🚗 To get around Bekasi, you can take a taxi, rent a motorbike, or use local public transportation, such as the minibus (angkot). Angkots are cheap but can be crowded. Accommodation Suggestions 🏨 You can choose to stay in the city center, which offers convenient transportation and a full range of amenities at reasonable prices. The rooms are clean and tidy, and the service is excellent. If you want to experience local life, you can also choose a unique homestay with a cozy atmosphere and a strong sense of Indonesian life. Things to Note 1. Indonesia is a religious country, so dress respectfully when visiting religious sites like mosques. Women should wear a headscarf, and men should wear long pants. 2. The local climate is hot, so take precautions against sun and mosquito bites. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and mosquito repellent. 3. When eating at street stalls or small restaurants, pay attention to food hygiene to avoid stomach upset from unclean food.

Entrance price to this Zoo is ridiculously low, so low in fact many joggers simply pay the entrance fee so they run on "non-traffic congested" paths. There is plenty to see although some of the enclosures are empty. Its the only place I know where you can be photographed with a 200kg 7m python for a few dollars. There was no raw sewage smell and the animals look well fed. There were plenty of trees for shade and the ground was clean. The animals at Ragunan Zoo are also quite varied, from a bunch of Australian Pelicans near the entrance gate to some exotic ones like White Bengal Tigers, the endangered Sumateran Tigers, Orangutans, and cute Sumateran Elephants that would entertain you throughout your jogging spree. So, refresh yourself with a cool jogging experience in Jakarta, with some animals along the way! #urbanexplorer
